Tascam Ships DR-60DmkII DSLR Audio Recorder

Tascam Ships DR-60DmkII DSLR Audio Recorder | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it

Tascam is shipping an updated "Mark II" version of its DR-60D four-channel linear PCM audio recorder designed for use with DSLRs.

The DR-60DmkII has been fitted with new microphone preamps that allow up to 64dB of gain, Tascam said, compared to a max of 52dB on the previous model. Like its predecessor, the DR-60DmkII records WAV or BWAV audio at up to 96kHz/24-bit to SD or SDHC cards.

The DR-60DmkII is desgined to sit between a DSLR and its tripod, with a mounting screw on top and a socket hole on the bottom.

The camera output is attenuated to mic level to keep from overloading the camera; the recorder can be used to record four channels of audio on set, or a dual-recording mode can be employed to simultaneously record one two-channel track along with a second safety track at a lower level—another hedge against distortion.

Jeremy Wilker's insight:

price and design look good, if you shoot on a DSLR-style camera

How Do You Make a Career in Indie Film in the Age of Piracy?

How Do You Make a Career in Indie Film in the Age of Piracy? | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it
"One of the hardest pills to swallow is that you no longer just get to make films and be creative, and leave business things up to business people," said Emily Best. "That environment has left filmmakers and investors scrounging for cash for a long time now. If you don't think of yourself as a businessperson and filmmaker, you're not looking at the whole picture. You will not find success in this environment."

Getting Cheesy - Ben Allan shoots a mini-doc with a pre-production Sony FS7

Getting Cheesy - Ben Allan shoots a mini-doc with a pre-production Sony FS7 | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it
With only what’s in the FS7 box, you can be up and shooting handheld in minutes. The level of comfort and stability is as good as any Scarlet, C300 or F5 with a well thought out rig (but without the expense).

The FS7 is an exciting camera that fills a current void in the market and shows how much Sony are listening to their users.

Sony had the express aim of creating a documentary style camera the FS7, but it will also have much broader applications. The picture quality, range of shooting options and flexibility of operation is astounding at the price point.
Jeremy Wilker's insight:

gotta get my hands on this camera...

and a great subject choice: a passionate person who loves cheese.

Between IBC and Photokina, the past couple of weeks have seen numerous
interesting camera announcements.

Panasonic LX100

Panasonic announced the LUMIX LX100. The name makes as much sense as camera
names ever can, as it's bigger and badder than the single-digit LX models
that were my point-and-shoots of choice for years. Some of my most-loved
photos were made with my LX1, LX2, and LX3. I have an eight-foot-wide print
from my LX2 hanging in my home. The LX100 is a MFT camera with a 10.9–34m
Jeremy Wilker's insight:

the sony FS7 definitely looks like the big winner here. although the Sony RX100 Mark II/III are stellar pocket point-and-shoot cameras that do RAW and HD video.

DCP failure rate is extraordinarily high. Should you make one?

DCP failure rate is extraordinarily high. Should you make one? | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it

the main takeaway here is that the DCP’s slow and seemingly inevitable rise to the top is continuing, although the actual majority of venues (especially in the U.S.) are still trying to cut costs by the use of BluRay. In Europe, the DCP has already overtaken all other formats, and is nearly impossible to resist if you want to play in any reputable festivals or venues. And after DCP and BluRay, all other formats are now nearly dead worldwide, at least for now...

But the (dirty and secret) truth is that COST isn’t the main problem with DCP. It is the RELIABILITY of the format. The horrible fact is that DCP is the most unreliable format in terms of playability that we have ever had….bar none that I can think of.

Jeremy Wilker's insight:

yikes. personally, I lean towards providing a digital file or a BluRay disc. way easier, way cheaper - for everyone involved.
