Top 10 offbeat places in Uttarakhand | India-Travels | Scoop.it
There are a number of unheard,
offbeat places in Uttarakhand that many don’t know about. We have compiled a list of our 10 favourite relatively unknown destinations in this lovely hilly state, that are a must visit for their natural beauty and tranquility.

Harsil

Harsil is a spectacular offbeat destination in Uttarakhand where you can experience the all the wonders of the Great Himalayan Range, from hot springs and waterfalls to forests and icy glaciers. This is also where “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” was shot.

Harsil Valley (by Debrupm)

Often ignored by travellers who move on towards Gangotri, Harsil has plenty of trekking options around the Bhagirathi River and in the woods. It is the picture-perfect valley with white sandy beaches, fruit orchards, pine forests and snowy mountains.

Binsar

Known for the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, this is a heavily forested area full of oak, rhododendron and pine trees. This is a birder’s paradise with over 200 species of birds residing here. You will also come across deers, jackals, and if you are lucky, even leopards.

Roufus Sibia (DickDaniels (http://carolinabirds.org)

A must do trek is the 1 km long route from TRH to Zero Point on the Jhandi Dhar Hill. There is a machan erected here, that offers a 360 and deg; panoramic view of the sanctuary and the surrounding snowy peaks.

Kalsi

Kalsi is a small, sleepy village on the banks of Yamuna, and is blessed with some of the finest landscapes of the Doon Valley. There’s a lot you can do here. The Chakrata foothills is full of intriguing trails. A wonderful 3 km trek begins from the Ashram Road to the Kala Patthar Village.

Other activities include angling, rafting and birdwatching. History buffs can check out the Ashokan Rock Edict, a 2200 year old rock edict of Emperor Ashoka, located on the riverside.

Pithoragarh
An important base for the Indian National Army, Pithoragarh offers little in terms of entertainment, but you’ll enjoy exploring this pretty village. Full of citrus orchards and gigantic cucumbers, Pithoragarh has a fort, a golf course and secluded forest trails

You can also plan a trip to Jhulaghat (33 km away) on the Nepal border, just for the fun of crossing a hanging bridge and arriving abroad without a passport!

Jageshwar

Known for housing one of the 12 sacred jyotirlingas in India, Jageshwar is primarily a pilgrimage destination, and an interesting one at that. The small temple complex houses 124 shrines dating from 5th to 18 century, and are now managed by the ASI. The three main shrines of Jageshwar, Mahamrityunjaya and Pushti Devi are a must visit.

The guesthouses here, offer the best of Kumaoni cuisine. And there are nice forest trails and picnic spots in the area, where you are most likely to be alone with nature.

Pangot is barely 15 km from Nainital, yet shares none of its bustle and commercialism. This is an ideal retreat to experience isolation and wilderness in Uttarakhand.

Ramgarh

Fruit-laden orchards, brooks and forested hillsides, Ramgarh has it all! The best way to explore Ramgarh is to take a walk around through this sleepy village. The roads are lined with plum and apricot trees, and in season, you can pretty much pick all the fruit you want from these trees.
