This global map of wind speeds is a great companion to this United States map. This interactive map is a 'nearly live' dynamic display of United States winds patterns (speed, direction and broad spatial context).

Why Americans All Believe They Are 'Middle Class'

Why Americans All Believe They Are 'Middle Class' | Independent and self oriented | Scoop.it

Anat Shenker-Osorio (Atlantic)

Last week, President Obama went on the road promoting an economic agenda for the middle class. As expected, John Boehner and other Republicans fired back by charging Obama with “squeezing the middle class.” It’s not even an election year, yet “middle class” is hotly contested linguistic real estate. But nobody seems to know what this term means.

“Middle class” remains our favored self-designation, although the percentage of Americans who select it fell from 53 percent in 2008 to 49 most recently, according to Pew Research. As a friend’s high-school teacher loved to say, “The great thing about America is that everyone can be middle class.” Good thing she wasn’t teaching math.

Given this popularity, it is no mystery why “in the interest of the middle class” now beats “for the children” as political cliché. The puzzle is why so many who do not fit the category (as median family income reported as just above $50,000 defines it) believe they do. Why does the description “middle-class nation” continue to feel appropriate, desirable, or both?

M. R. RAO's insight:

Listening is the most important criteria for anything we do in our day to day activity. Whether it's for business, meeting, communication or for that matters any activity where people's presence and involvement is active.you have nothing to loose. Make it a habit and reap reward for self and the business in which you are associated

Eric_Determined / Eric Silverstein's curator insight, October 21, 2013 11:36 AM

Without customers, you would not be in business!

Everyone within your organization plays a role:

- To listen

- To understand

- To engage

Kate provides great insight: "Get everyone listening to the customer. Break down the silos. Allow all to hear and use the free feedback for superior customer experience.

It’s a matter of today’s profitability and the company’s longevity. Companies go out of business when the customers’ needs and wants change and the company doesn’t!"

Back in the 1970s I stayed seated whenever the national anthem was played during public events. A number of us did. It was a small form of civil disobedience and I’m sure it pissed a lot of people off, but it seemed necessary: we were fighting a war in Vietnam that made no sense and forcing young men into the draft. I didn’t like the national anthem, and I was pretty discouraged by the very sight of Old Glory, too.

I’m not sure how much of this behavior came about due to anger and how much was a result of shame.....

Via Michael Charney

To start with you were young. As you grew slowly and steadily you realized what wrong / disrespect you were causing to your national anthem and then you repent

with education + age maturity comes

Do Americans Believe Capitalism & Government Are Working?: Findings from the 2013 Economic Values Survey

Do Americans Believe Capitalism & Government Are Working?: Findings from the 2013 Economic Values Survey | Independent and self oriented | Scoop.it

This survey by the Public Religion Research Institute and Governance Studies at Brookings examines Americans' views on capitalism, government, economic policy, and financial well-being.

It found that Americans are concerned about the lack of jobs (26% cited this as the most important economic issue), the budget deficit (17%), and the rising cost of health care (18%) and education (9%). Overall, they are pessimistic about what the future holds. A majority (54%) believes that hard work and determination are no guarantee of success and, perhaps more alarming, a majority (52%) also believes their generation is better off financially than the next generation will be.
