AUSTIN (KXAN) — A charity claiming to help veterans is accused of misusing millions of donated dollars. The charge comes from the Texas Attorney General's office.

The AG says VSO raised money through what they call structured panhandling. Proverbial hired panhandlers stand on street corners or in front of businesses. The lawsuit says sometimes they’d be out here 12 hours a day to try and raise at least $225.

Just as the last Canadian soldiers deployed in Afghanistan returned home today, news emerged that two soldiers took their own lives.

In November, three other Canadian veterans who had served in Afghanistan were found dead within in a week. They had taken their own lives.

Glenn McDuffie was 18 years old the day World War II ended. Having just exited a New York subway station at Times Square, McDuffie, a sailor, heard the news, grabbed a nurse and kissed her.

McDuffie went on to be a semi-professional basketball player and worked as a mail carrier. He will be buried at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, the AP reported.

Murdough was arrested Feb. 7 on a misdemeanor trespassing charge for sleeping in an enclosed stairwell on the roof of a public housing building in Harlem and sent to Rikers after being unable to post a $2,500 bail, court records show.

 

He was found dead in his cell in a special unit for inmates with mental illnesses a week later, in the early hours of Feb. 15, the officials said.

It is possible that many combat veterans suffer from the affliction but do not talk about it, she said.

The research was a collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and a pharmaceutical company that manufactures a drug to treat the conditions. Findings will be presented Friday at the 10th World Conference on Brain Injury in San Francisco.

U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Whitacre said he was serving on the USS Colhoun when kamikaze pilots attacked it during the Battle of Okinawa in April 1945.  

 

Sixty men were lost, either killed in the attack, fatally injured or drowned.  Some perhaps were trapped in the ship when the captain ordered compartments to be sealed off.
