I agree! Music is a great tool to introduce new concepts and vocabulary. One of the teachers I work with uses songs to introduce vocabulary and it helps the lesson run very smoothly and helps with memorization even when days pass after the lesson has been taught!

Why Arts Education Must Be Saved | Edutopia

Why Arts Education Must Be Saved | Edutopia | Incorporating Art and Music in the Classroom | Scoop.it

Almost every one of us can point back to a creative pursuit, in or out of school, that enhanced our skills, knowledge, or understanding. Yet the majority of secondary school students in the United States aren't required to enroll in arts courses, many elementary schools nationwide lack art classes or activities, and arts and music instruction is often the first thing to go when schools feel the pressure to improve test scores.

This highly engaging and thought provoking article examines the need and importance for arts education in schools today. The article is very relevant to educators in today's context as it juggles issues of how importance certain key learning areas are with others. As technology is a subject that also encompasses similar characteristics as the arts (creative knowledge, design etc) it is a captivating insight into how our curriculum prioritises particular subjects, and begs the question of why we have to integrate arts education into other subject areas, and whether this in fact is right or wrong.

DIY is a service to discover Skills and learn all the ways to make our world. On our website and mobile app, Makers browse through thousands of projects, make the ones they love, and share everything with the community.
Katiebelle Wheelock's insight:

This is an amazing site!! The site encourages children to be creative by presenting activities of DIY crafts to make. Children make a profile where they can post the projects they are working on and connect with other children to share ideas and offer feedback. The basis behind the website is for children to earn patches by learning specific skills. Each skill is made up of a set of challenges that the child attempts in order to learn the skill and then earn a patch. The challenges are designed to be open-ended so that children can invent their own solutions. The challenges and skill based learning allows children to learn plenty of new skills through DIY activities. The skills can be incorporating into a curriculum to help inspire the students!
