5 Apps for Making Movies on Mobile Devices | Monica Burns Blog | Edutopia.org | High School Digital Media | Scoop.it

Every year at Hollywood award shows, we see fantastic movies celebrated for their rich storytelling and dynamic performances. Your students can become moviemakers, too, thanks to some powerful apps for mobile devices. With these tools, your children can take videos and edit their work to make professional quality movies using iOS devices (iPads and iPhones) and Android tablets.

One good thing about this easy-to-use technology is that students can still use important English language arts skills like writing a narrative, planning a sequential story, and including key details when getting ready to make a movie. These apps can enhance the work that you are doing with children in the classroom and give them room to be creative storytellers.

3-D printing enlivens students' ideas

3-D printing enlivens students' ideas | High School Digital Media | Scoop.it

"In the corner of Jason Steele's classroom at Oblock Junior High School in Plum, Pa., two 3-D printers whirred softly as they slowly created two objects out of blue plastic thread. Mr. Steele is using the four printers in his eighth-grade technology education classes to allow students to develop a three-dimensional object on a computer and turn it into a physical product."

The power of liberation. Letting students shape their own learning is one of the most powerful techniques a teacher has in their repertoire. Unfortunately, it most cases, it can only be used in a clandestine fashion, hoping to not upset the applecart that is school administration. Fortunately, as this article shows, there are some teachers and schools who lead through innovation, through trusting students, and through sheer guts.

Inquiry over iPads: Creating Digital Fairy Tales using Puppet Pals/ Sketchbook Pro/ iMovie

Inquiry over iPads: Creating Digital Fairy Tales using Puppet Pals/ Sketchbook Pro/ iMovie | High School Digital Media | Scoop.it

"We loved the idea of using iPads to help guide students through the process of learning. When Google Drive was placed on the iPads at our school we knew this would be a way for us to transfer student work off devices and eagerly planned a project to utilize the technology.

We asked the Students in our Grade 3/4 classes to make their own original digital fairy tale. Using a hook, relating to the Calgary flood of 2013, students wrote a fairy tale for a character displaced by the flood. Students were guided through a variety of writing lessons, based on Barbara Mariconda’s work, students worked in groups of two to write, illustrate and produce an original fairy tale iMovie."

Study: Should Shy Students Tweet Instead Of Raising Their Hand?

Study: Should Shy Students Tweet Instead Of Raising Their Hand? | High School Digital Media | Scoop.it

"...new research from Southern Cross University has found strong benefits for the use of Twitter by students too embarrassed or uncomfortable to ask teachers questions in the time-honoured raised-hand method. Southern Cross business lecturer Jeremy Novak, along with Central Queensland University’s Dr Michael Cowling, studied the use of Twitter among university students as a method for asking questions and gaining feedback without having to stand the stares and scrutiny of fellow students. The positive feedback from students, particularly international students, has convinced the research team the use of Twitter technology could also be embraced by classrooms at high school and even primary school level."

Talking to High School Students about Technology Electives

Talking to High School Students about Technology Electives | High School Digital Media | Scoop.it

"I don’t often talk about high school in this blog, but one of my contributors, Sara Stringer, reminded me that there’s a lot to consider about tech and high school. Here are her thoughts:

"Technology classes are proven to prepare students for college, so why do students sometimes forgo these classes in high school? When the time comes to choose high school classes, it’s important to fit in technology. College bound students will find that technology courses broaden their education, thus leading them to better schools. It really doesn’t matter what profession a student is pursuing, technology skills are important across a very broad spectrum and therefore most colleges are pleased to find the class on a student’s transcripts."
