Inclusive teaching and learning
Many learners struggle to engage with formal education. This can be for a range of reasons and there's no simple answer to any of them. This site is about reducing the barriers to engagement wherever possible. It will often focus on technology but that's only because technology has a lot to offer in many contexts. Other 'human based' approaches can be just as effective so they'll also get space when they cross the horizon.

alistairm 's insight:

I've been looking around for a more fully featured GIF animator than UNFREEZ. Photoscape (a full, free and portable image editing package) has a beautiful intuitive GIF animation tool. Fantastic for turning PowerPoint slide gif or jpg exports into mobile phone friendly animated gifs.

To make it portable, install it on a pc to which you have admin rights, then find the folder under C:/programs etc and simply copy whole Photoscape folder to a pen drive.

Dave is an extremely gifted clairvoyant who finds out specific financial information. This video reveals the magic behind the magic, making people aware of the fact that their entire life can be found online. And by doing so urging everybody to be vigilant.

Sometimes we do not appreciate how much information we convey online on social networks which can be curated and possibly used by less scrupulous people.

Here is a lesson for all of us!

Accessible EPUB3 ebook reader for Android - for free... | Inclusive teaching and learning | Scoop.it

According to Steve Jacobs, president of IDEAL Group and CEO, Apps4Android, “We are thrilled to be able to offer a high-quality, fully-accessible, ePub3 Reader to both consumers and the publishing industry worldwide.” IGR will be made available to users at no cost. The Beta version of IGR was tested by thousands of users in 116 countries.

alistairm 's insight:

Android accessibility is catching up with Apple - an accessible eBook reader for Android is a great leap forward. I wonder how many books you can actually purchase through this system though? That's the real issue here. The ebook supply chain has so many components (format, discovery, purchase, download, device, software etc that it's like spinning plates - you need to get the whole lot working together to provide anend to end accesible experience. Still, this is another welcome jigsaw piece in place....

John Dalziel's curator insight, January 29, 2013 4:07 PM

These videos reveal some of the mystery behind numbers and maths in fun, short snippets! The Numberphile videos could provide excellent openers for maths classes.
Use Triptico, or similar tools, to select learner groups and to allocate a different video for each group to watch. Learners can learn a new maths “trick” or pattern to teach their peers. The goal: to creatively teach the concept! They could create their own video, stop motion animation, infographic, story, illustration, Helloslide, etc.

Note: All of the videos on Numberphile are YouTube videos.

Is lecture capture the worst educational technology?

alistairm 's insight:

This article manages to express in words some of the intuitive unease I've felt abut lecture capture technology. Some very interesting follow up comments too - especially the stats that show despite massive student engagement (33k views) the average viewing time was 9.7 minutes. Why not record the most significant 10 mins of the lecture as a video and make it available before the lecture so you can actually use the lecture for interesting activities?

Don't you just love mobile apps? So do malicious code writers | Inclusive teaching and learning | Scoop.it
There are some surprising numbers available that tell a dark story about mobile apps and what they can be doing on your device.

By now you've read about malicious apps that leak privacy data, but do you realize how serious it really is? If not, you'd better pay attention to the following statistics gathered by Symantec*. And if you think that Google Play is 100% safe, it isn't. I have some data that yields some shocking results about the number of malicious apps waiting to grab your data.
