Inclusive teaching and learning
Many learners struggle to engage with formal education. This can be for a range of reasons and there's no simple answer to any of them. This site is about reducing the barriers to engagement wherever possible. It will often focus on technology but that's only because technology has a lot to offer in many contexts. Other 'human based' approaches can be just as effective so they'll also get space when they cross the horizon.

This is one of those techniques that can make a huge difference when working with disabled learners (or even just mischievous learners!). Make sure they can't accidentally or deliberately press the wrong buttons or lose focus on the task in hand by switching to other apps.

Margaret McKay's curator insight, February 25, 2013 7:17 AM

We are in the process of writing up a case study where staff in FE colleges are using their own iPad/iPhones with learners.  Guided Access has been a very useful feature because it allows lecturers to control what students can and cannot access on their devices.  Want to know more?  Keep an eye on the new case studies due to be added on our RSC Scotland Showcase (http://www.rsc-scotland.org/) between now and Easter.

So glad this is being taught now...I have written alt tags that were about appearance and not meaning in the past just because I didn't know any better. WebAim is a good resource too.
alistairm 's comment, February 26, 2013 12:16 PM
Sometimes the problem is that people feel they have to provide all the info rather than focusing on learning objectives. Standardistas don't always help - the number of times I've seen people insist that audio needs a full transcript for deaf people but since most deaf people are print impaired by virtue of working in a second language why would anyone subject them to redundant extra text instead of summarising the important bits (which - actually - would be welcomed by many other users too!).

Numberphile - Videos about Numbers and Stuff

Via John Dalziel

Really nice videos and the ones I sampled were subtitled too - good for accessibility and also for use with people where English is a non-native language.

John Dalziel's curator insight, January 29, 2013 4:07 PM

These videos reveal some of the mystery behind numbers and maths in fun, short snippets! The Numberphile videos could provide excellent openers for maths classes.
Use Triptico, or similar tools, to select learner groups and to allocate a different video for each group to watch. Learners can learn a new maths “trick” or pattern to teach their peers. The goal: to creatively teach the concept! They could create their own video, stop motion animation, infographic, story, illustration, Helloslide, etc.

Note: All of the videos on Numberphile are YouTube videos.
