Inclusive teaching and learning
Many learners struggle to engage with formal education. This can be for a range of reasons and there's no simple answer to any of them. This site is about reducing the barriers to engagement wherever possible. It will often focus on technology but that's only because technology has a lot to offer in many contexts. Other 'human based' approaches can be just as effective so they'll also get space when they cross the horizon.

UKAAF Guidance download page - UKAAF - UK Association for Accessible Formats

UKAAF Guidance download page Click the link to jump to downloads for General , Audio , Braille , Large Print , E-file , Moon ,  Accessible Images The UKAAF guidance documents on this page are free to download in doc, docx and PDF formats.
alistairm 's insight:

Struggling to know ow to describe an image, graph, map etc for VI users? This guidance from UK Association for Accessible Formats gives you some good starting points and worked examples. Beware though - there is a balance to be struck between describing everything in an image and  the bits that are relevant to the learning objectives. If you know the key learning objectives, stick with those. Describing irrelevant detail creates unnecessary barriers to people who are often accessing info at a slower speed already!

Talking eBooks: Helping blind and partially sighted people access library eBooks | Blog | Reading Sight | Inclusive teaching and learning | Scoop.it
Reading Sight helps blind and partially sighted people access books and information (in braille, audio, large print and other accessible formats) by supporting librarians, teachers, voluntary workers and families.
alistairm 's insight:

This is aimed at public libraries and leisure reading but much of the advice is equally suitable for visually impaired people in an academic library context.

Food for thought - accessible e-book platforms? | Jisc TechDis Blog | Inclusive teaching and learning | Scoop.it
Alistair McNaught draws on his dietary whims to ask when did it become the job of librarians to assess the accessibility of ebook platforms?
alistairm 's insight:

Library staff have been pretty passive about this up to now but I suspect it's going to change sometime soon - it only takes one learner to sue one institution for one inaccessible ebook platform and there will be a scramble for platforms with decent guidance on their accessibility features.

Topping idea. I'm thinking of sending each supplier a report card to tell them how they're performing on all the criteria we tested!!
Abi James's curator insight, July 19, 2013 4:04 PM

Alistair demonstrates perfectly the need for anyone providing digital content to understand and be transparent about accessibility. Without it, the opportunities that digital content could provide dyslexic and disabled pupils, students and adults is fading away.
