A sustainable model for using mobile devices to assist with analysing learners' literacy and numeracy skills will be developed in a pilot program. The project will develop, trial and evaluate an e-learning mobile solution to test literacy and numeracy capabilities of disadvantaged young people in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley. When poor literacy and numeracy skills are combined with youth experiencing intellectual disabilities or mental health issues, or where they come from dysfunctional families, the chance of them remaining in formal education is greatly diminished.

Services Seta fighting unemployment in rural areas

According to the Services Seta, South Africa cannot afford to focus only on developed regions and municipalities in metropolitan areas. There is a severe lack of skills, especially in rural communities where the youth are not employable. These proposed programmes will assist the communities to increase the pool of skilled young adults, making them more employable as job seekers and eventually absorbed in the market place within their communities....

Taking the subtitle of this page: What Inspires Us as my guide, I am sharing a math initiative which has inspired me due to the work of our teachers who have been involved in a math professional development model called Collaborative Inquiry for Learning in Mathematics (CIL-M). What has been particularly inspiring is the high degree of involvement of teachers in the work of changing their math practice from teacher-focussed classroom teaching to student-focussed teaching, which starts with teaching through problem solving.
