When Allia started back in 1999, social investment was barely on the radar. By and large, investment was about making more money, and social impact was created by giving it away. But over the last 14 years, we've seen considerable development in the number of organisations that are working to develop this market and in the level of support from government to see it grow. It's still a tiny market compared to the volume of funds given away each year in philanthropic donations but, if the forecast by Boston Consulting Group is anything to go by, demand for social investment could go from £165m of deals done in 2011 to £1bn by 2016.
