Startup incubators and accelerator programs appear to be the latest rage! You may have heard about one of the programs supporting entrepreneurs in a major city near you like TechStars, Y-Combinator, or MassChallenge (a personal favorite). Yet with all the hype and buzz about social entrepreneurship, few of these programs are entirely dedicated to scaling social impact and helping social ventures succeed.
Points of Light, originally founded in 1990 in response to President George H. W. Bush’s call for increasing national civic engagement, is changing the game with the launch of a new Civic Accelerator. The program, focused on helping social startups successfully launch innovative solutions to the nation’s most intractable problems, is a joint venture between Points of Light and Village Capital. The Civic Accelerator provides funding, mentoring, entrepreneurial education and more to social entrepreneurs. With a rock-star team of supporters from PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc., to Starbucks Coffee Company and CSRwire, the Civic Accelerator will invest in nonprofit and for-profit startups that inspire, equip and mobilize people to create positive change!
