Register TODAY - WEBINAR: Reaching Scale in Access to Energy | Inclusive Business in Asia | Scoop.it

Join me tomorrow at the webinar: Entering the next frontier markets
- Overcoming challenges for solar success beyond peri-urban areas of East Africa and India

20th September 5.30pm Mumbai | 3pm Nairobi | 2pm Paris | 8am Washington D.C.

This webinar will explore solutions for distributors of solar lanterns and home systems to scale up beyond the peri-urban markets of East Africa and India. With inputs from solar company Lumos and experience from USAID, Hystra will share lessons drawn from the observation of pioneering models. These will range from rural areas, where margins on entry-level products are too low to pay for sales agents, and where consumer reassurance and quality of service are critical, to emerging markets with less favorable regulatory environments (e.g. lower solar awareness, higher landed costs, absence of mobile money, lower income levels), where alternative distribution models are needed.

Zebra companies offer an alternative to the unicorn fantasy

Zebra companies offer an alternative to the unicorn fantasy | Inclusive Business in Asia | Scoop.it
This new movement demands a new symbol, so we’re claiming an animal of our own: the zebra. Why zebras? To state the obvious: unlike unicorns, zebras are real. Zebra companies are both black and white: they are profitable and improve society. They won’t sacrifice one for the other. Zebras are also mutualistic: by banding together in groups, they protect and preserve one another. Their individual input results in stronger collective output. Zebra companies are built with peerless stamina and capital efficiency, as long as conditions allow them to survive.

Workshop discusses organic production and inclusive business in Vietnam

Workshop discusses organic production and inclusive business in Vietnam | Inclusive Business in Asia | Scoop.it

The two-day event was also co-organized by the German Development Cooperation, Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), Naturland - Association for Organic Farming and Saigon Co.op, aiming to jointly develop an organic development declaration to jointly strengthen the organic sector and its potential.
Since its start in 1999, based mainly on joint Vietnamese-European projects and initiatives, organic farming in Vietnam has developed positively. An important driver has been the increasing demand for organic seafood by European retailers. In addition, there is a growing demand for safe and organic foods by Vietnamese consumers as well. Despite an economic rapid growth, stabilization of the Vietnamese organic sector all along the value chain will be essential to foster future growth.

IFC Launches Innovative Social Bond Program, Raising $500 Million Through Benchmark Bond

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, today issued a $500 million global benchmark bond, launching an innovative Social Bond Program to expand financing for projects that benefit women-owned enterprises and low-income communities in emerging markets.
The three-year bond was 1.4 times oversubscribed. It was bought by more than 40 institutional investors across the world—including central banks, official institutions, pension funds, and fund managers. The size of the issuance helps deepen the market for a new but rapidly growing category of sustainability bonds.
IFC will use the bond proceeds to finance projects that help improve social outcomes—specifically by providing finance to companies that buy from smallholder farmers, provide utilities for low-income households, offer affordable health services, education, or housing to low-income people. The funds will also be used to support financial institutions that lend to women-owned enterprises.

Inclusive Business in the Asean region

Inclusive Business in the Asean region | Inclusive Business in Asia | Scoop.it

“The economic integration effort would be meaningless if the economic rewards of growth and prosperity will exclude the MSMEs which account for almost 95-99 percent of the total enterprise across ASEAN.”

This is what I said to the economic ministers during the ASEAN Economic Ministers Retreat last week in relation to the ASEAN BAC’s theme of “Partnering for Change, Prosperity for All.”

I, together with some ASEAN Business Advisory Council members, presented the agenda of the council to the economic ministers on how we can all bring about prosperity in the ASEAN region. As mentioned before, we want to bring inclusive growth not just for the selected few, but for all sectors across 10 countries.

The retreat and related meetings was successfully hosted by the AEM chair, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez and his team in DTI. This is just one of the many activities of DTI this year as Philippines hosts ASEAN for its 50th anniversary.

During the engagement with the economic ministers, I explained the three key pillars of ASEAN BAC. First, we are promoting inclusive business in the region where large corporations will act as big brothers to the micro and small entrepreneurs
