This was an extremely important step for Google. This allows Gmail and Google+ users, who are becoming more and more weary of Facebook and all of the ads, to sign into a commerce site or application site using Google+ - which is excellent for the website owner, since most of the important demographic information and search habits of the Google+ user are then accessible to the website owner, who can use such information to target advertising and content. Facebook and Twitter already allow this - we don't believe the best information comes from Twitter sign ins... right now, a website owner really wants the user to sign in with their Facebook account because of all the information that becomes accessible, including what is typically the best email address at which to reach the consumer. Google has just opened the door to be able to help website owners in a similar fashion.
