Correlation tests are fascinating. Researchers scour Google’s statements about search and observations by SEOs for whatever they can quantify. They’ll go through HTML, social media sites, content patterns and more looking for anything they can isolate and measure.

 

Organize all the possible signals, gather measurements on hundreds or thousands of data points, compare them to ranking results or site traffic and then publish the results. Even with the obvious caveat, correlation does not guarantee causation, it’s easy to understand why correlation study insights are popular and valuable.

I'm not sure traditional advertising will ever be displaced.  But, as this well-researched infographic points out,  content is becoming an important sidekick,  especially among B2B marketers.  As the manifestation of a the brands inner layer beliefs and values,  content marketing quickly moving from "nice to have," towards "need to have." It gains its power from the fact that unlike tradtional advertising that "asks,"  content "gives."

One adman’s view I particularly subscribe to is that of Bill Bernbach.

“Advertising is fundamentally persuasion and persuasion happens to be not a science, but an art.”

Bernbach had deep insight into human nature. He believed that in order for brand communicators to become human persuaders they needed to get at the heart of what motivates people.

 

Bernbach believed that successful communicators are not only concerned with what they put into a piece of writing but what the reader gets out of it; they’re “students of how people read and listen”.

 

Good communicators understand that readers read with their ego, their emotions, their compulsions, their prejudices, their urges, their aspirations and that they plot with their brain to rationalize the facts until they become the tools of their desires.

 

Good communicators must therefore be good storytellers.
