We'd better start teaching keyboarding now, before these students face online assessments!

Free Technology for Teachers: Create Beautiful Presentations with Haiku Deck

Free Technology for Teachers: Create Beautiful Presentations with Haiku Deck | In the Library and out in the world | Scoop.it

By Richard Byrne

"Haiku Deck is an iPad app that all students and teachers should have installed on their iPads. Haiku Deck enables anyone to create beautiful slide presentations. It's so easy to use that when I was describing the app to someone last week I said it was like "Animoto for slide decks." Like other slide presentation apps Haiku provides templates for creating your presentation. But there are some significant differences between Haiku Deck and other presentation apps.

"There are two features of Haiku Deck that stand out. First, Haiku Deck intentionally limits how much text that you can put on each of your slides. Second, Haiku Deck helps you find Creative Commons licensed images for your presentations. When you type a word or words on your slides you can have Haiku Deck search for images for you. The images that Haiku Deck serves up are large enough to completely fill your slide. You can also upload your own images from your iPad or import images from Instagram and Facebook."

"Grizzly Ape is a software development company in the U.K. that has built some handy Firefox add-ons. One of their free add-ons is Screen Draw.

"With Screen Draw installed you can type on and or draw free-hand on any webpage that you're viewing in Firefox. You could circle elements on a page then type a bit about that element. Your screen drawings can be saved as PNG and JPG files."

According to Joyce Valenza, teacher librarian at Springfield Township High School in Pennsylvania and author of School Library Journal’s “Never Ending Search” blog, this is the golden age of librarianship.

Co-presenting a session at educational technology leader Alan November’s 2012 Building Learning Communities (BLC) conference on July 19 with Shannon McClintock Miller, district librarian and technology integration specialist at Van Meter Schools in Iowa, Valenza outlined five areas in which K-12 schools should turn to their librarians to empower learners with valuable 21st-century college and career readiness skills.

Media literacy education helps protect children from the harmful effects of media messages | Marketing, Media and Childhood

Media literacy education is effective in reducing risky or antisocial behaviors among children and youth of all ages and for all topics of focus, such as tobacco use, violence and sex, according to researchers who conducted a comprehensive review of the existing research on media literacy – the first of its kind.

“Media literacy is being adopted for broad areas of applications – drinking, smoking, sexual health,” co-author Hyunyi Cho said by phone today. One of the important results of this investigation, she said, would be “to create knowledge and awareness among policymakers and educators that media literacy is an effective tool, and to spur more research on media literacy.”

The study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Communications, is the first quantitative meta-analysis of the English-language research on media literacy education, according to Dr. Cho, associate professor of health communication and risk communication at Purdue University.

Why Web Literacy Should Be Part of Every Education

Why Web Literacy Should Be Part of Every Education | In the Library and out in the world | Scoop.it
Like reading, writing, and arithmetic, web literacy is both content and activity. You don’t just learn “about” reading: you learn to read. You don’t just learn “about” arithmetic: you learn to count and calculate. You don’t just learn “about” the web: you learn to make your own website. As with these other three literacies, web literacy begins simply, with basics you can build upon. For some it can lead to a profession (i.e. becoming a computer programmer) while for most it becomes part of the conceptual DNA that helps you to understand and negotiate the world you live in.
