10 Favorite Systems Thinking Books of the Past 10+ Years > Change that Works | "IN-novation" | Scoop.it

"Here's a helpful list of systems thinking books from the editor of The Systems Thinker news on Pegasus, a favorite blog spot I follow.  Systems and change are married to each other in creating change that works.

I have several of these and will probably be getting the e-editions of others from this great list.

"General Systems Theory, a related modern concept

[to holism],says that each variable in any system

interacts with the other variables

so thoroughly that cause and effect

cannot be separated.

A simple variable can be both cause and effect.

Reality will not be still. And it cannot be taken apart!

You cannot understand a cell, a rat, a brain structure,

a family, a culture if you isolate it from its context.

Relationship is everything."

- Marilyn Ferguson,

The Aquarian Conspiracy

A sample from her blog post:

She admits Russell Ackoff writings and Senge's new edition of The Fifth Discipline go without saying as great systems thinking classics.  That said, her list includes:

Thinking in Systems: A Primer by Donella H. Meadows (Chelsea Green, 2008) Dana Meadows had a unique ability to take the mystery out of what can be perceived as overly complex concepts.    DN:  I have this one and carry it around on my iPad everywhere, reminding myself when I get stuck how systems can be complex without being complicated.         Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World by John Sterman (McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2000) The core textbook for learning how to apply system dynamics modeling to complex organizational challenges. Even if you aren’t interested in modeling per se, Sterman’s clear, well-written explanations of the core elements of systems thinking make it worth a look.     Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update by Donella Meadows, Jorgen Randers, and Dennis L. Meadows (Chelsea Green, 2004) The most recent version of the influential system dynamics analysis of the impact of a rapidly growing population in a world of finite resources.

She's also listed several good books for children including two books by a relative of a former neighbor of mind.  Good stuff!

Connected Wisdom: Living Stories About Living Systems by Linda Booth Sweeney (SEED, 2009)  Her goal with two of her systems books is “to find a fun and memorable way to help kids see and understand the world of systems all around us.”

It's More Important to Be Kind than Clever

It's More Important to Be Kind than Clever | "IN-novation" | Scoop.it

by BILL TAYLOR

One of the more heart-warming stories to zoom around the Internet lately involves a young man, his dying grandmother, and a bowl of clam chowder from Panera Bread. It's a little story that offers big lessons about service, brands, and the human side of business — a story that underscores why efficiency should never come at the expense of humanity.

The story, as told in AdWeek, goes like this: Brandon Cook, from Wilton, New Hampshire, was visiting his grandmother in the hospital. Terribly ill with cancer, she complained to her grandson that she desperately wanted a bowl of soup, and that the hospital's soup was inedible (she used saltier language). If only she could get a bowl of her favorite clam chowder from Panera Bread! Trouble was, Panera only sells clam chowder on Friday. So Brandon called the nearby Panera and talked to store manager Suzanne Fortier. Not only did Sue make clam chowder specially for Brandon's grandmother, she included a box of cookies as a gift from the staff....

Getting the Balance Right: The innovation ecosystem, Infographic

Getting the Balance Right: The innovation ecosystem, Infographic | "IN-novation" | Scoop.it

"The right innovation mix, core, adjacent, and transformational  depends on your business and your needs."

Excerpted:

There are three main components of an organisation’s innovation ecosystem. Getting the balance right between these three components is crucial:

1) Balance/Mix of innovation types

2) Structure (process, capabilities, culture, funding)

3) Metrics & tracking

Core innovation is the largest amount of effort (70%) ...typically more incremental improvements

Adjacent innovation, riskier.  can involve taking existing products to new markets or, more commonly, developing value-add products or services to existing core     Transformational innovation, highest risk - new products and services, new markets – big changes to the business

'Generation Y' set to transform office life

'Generation Y' set to transform office life | "IN-novation" | Scoop.it

by Susanne Gargioulo

It could be out with old meeting rooms and in with new social spaces, as Generation Y is set to transform the way we work in the next 10 years.

In the U.S., those born between 1979 and 1997 are predicted to make up the largest part of the workforce within a decade and with it change offices and the nature of work itself.

"We are facing a huge generational shift, as baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) leave the workforce, and that means we have to rethink our workspace," says Michael O'Neill, senior director of workplace research for Knoll, Inc.

By the end of the decade, the balance in the U.S. will flip from approximately 50% baby boomers and 25% Generation Y workers to 25% baby boomers and 50% Generation Y workers, according to a 2010 report from Knoll, a workplace furnishing company.

"That is a massive shift, and it will happen in less than eight years," says O'Neill....
