Young people discuss their view of abstinence-only programs and conclude that the programs did not provide the information they needed to stay safe and healthy.

            This Youtube video shows how students respond to the abstinence-only programs. Most of the students say that the program was in affective and not useful. They would rather be taught through the CSE program. This video is useful information because it gives the view from the teens that went through the program themselves.

The New York City public schools recently sparked controversy with a new sex education curriculum that critics complain is too explicit. New York, and many other school districts, relies on curricula designed by outside experts. Guests talk about who decides what's included, and what's left out.

            In this interview the director of training at Answer, Nora Gelperin talks about what is taught about sex inside schools. Nora explains the different criteria that are taught around the country and how they differ. One difference she talks about is the age-appropriate material. Some material that is taught at the high school level is deemed too inappropriate for a middle school audience. Nora says that some topics are too controversial to be taught by the school; the most controversial being abortion. Some states go as far as to cut funding from a program that teaches about abortion. Nora Gelperin and Answer are credible sources that are based at Rutgers University.

The journal written by William Jeffries studies the teaching techniques and criteria used in sex education in schools. He states that the main teaching techniques used are abstinence-only-until-marriage education (AOE), and Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE). AOE teaches that abstinence is the only sure way to avoid pre-marital pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. CSE holds the same teaching, but it also teaches about condom use, decision-making, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Though CSE pushes abstinence, AOE is the program that got more governmental support and funding. William Jeffries is a credible source due to his work at the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law at the University of Florida.

This source is an image of a pedigree. A pedigree is a diagram of inheritance over at least one generation. This pedigree shows how two unaffected people can mate and have a child with a heredity disorder that neither parent knew they carried. These parents also have a fifty percent chance of conceiving a child that will carry the same disorder gene. This is how disorders get passed from generation to generation. This source seems creditable from the web page it was found on.

This source is a Midlands Technical College textbook, therefore; the information used from unit two is creditable. Chapters nine through chapter fourteen make up unit two which covers the genetic basis of life. Chapter nine covers the cell cycle and cell respiration. Chapter ten is about meiosis which is the process of how sex cells are made. Meaning how eggs and sperm are made. Chapter eleven is about Mendelian inheritance states how humans pass on their genes and traits over generations. Chapter twelve is about the molecular biology of the gene. This chapter goes into how genes form from DNA. Chapter thirteen is on the regulation of gene expression. This chapter discusses codons and sRNA. Chapter fourteen is on biotechnology and genomics. This is how biology and technology are being used together in reference to genetics.

Gov. Sarah Palin has been a strong supporter of programs that advocate abstinence until marriage, and she also opposes explicit sex education. Alaska's law is silent on these issues, however, and it provides no specific funding for sex education in the schools.

This podcast analyzes the growing problem of teenage pregnancy. It acknowledges that teenage pregnancy is a problem that needs fixing, but states that there is confusion on what to do about it. The podcast states that parents lean on local school boards to teach about the subject and push for abstinence. It talks about important figures and organizations that are deeply involved in sex education. For example: Sarah Palin and the National Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy.

This blog created by Rob Gorski gives an idea of what daily life is with an autistic child. Rob has three autistic sons and shares online the difficulties that come with raising them. This blog is updated daily primarily through his phone whenever he gets a chance to connect with his readers. Though his post are sometimes short, the author has also written beyond his blog. Rob has been published by CNN, and has been interviewed many times. The stories he tells aren’t glamorous tales that tell the reader only of the positives of having an autistic child. Gorski shares his personal difficulties with his given situation, and his innermost thoughts.

            This newspaper article was written in 2010, therefore, the information and research presented in the article is still relative. Sharon Jayson reports that teenage pregnancy and abortions are on the rise. In the research she cites, conducted by the Guttmacher Institute, it calculates that 7 percent of teen girls in the US got pregnant in 2006 (an increase of 4 percent). The Guttmacher Institute is a credible non-profit organization that studies reproductive and sexual health.

This source is an image of a chart containing five of the many hereditary disorders affecting humans today. The chart lists the disorders, the type of inheritance link, and the symptoms. the first disorder is sickle-anemia which is a recessive gene trait. The second disorder is Tay-Sachs disease. This is also a recessive gene trait. Cystic Fibrosis is the third disorder and it is also recessive. Hemophilia is the fourth disorder and this is a sex-linked gene trait; which means it is carried on the X chromosome. The last disorder on the chart is Huntington’s disease which is a dominant gene trait. This chart helps illustrate just a few of the troubling disorders that can occur when having a child. This source is creditably because it is used on a teacher’s website.

This essay by Anna Quindlen comes from the Midlands Technical College English 101 textbook. Thus, proving it is a reliable, creditable source. The essay discusses the issue of sex education in schools and at home. The author states that schools do not provide much beyond the basic information required, such as males have a penis, and testes and that females have a vagina, and ovaries. She also states that little else is commonly talked about at home. This essay also describes hoe the dynamics of teenagers have changed. Sex is now a widely discussed topic among teens as opposed to forty years ago. The author’s main idea is that even though young people today talk about and have sex doesn’t mean they know very much about it; which is a reason for the growing rate of teenage pregnancy.
