Articles: K-12: Occupied Territory | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
The only way to explain the dysfunction throughout our K-12 system is to understand that the people in charge are, in their hearts, anti-American. Everything they do is designed to undermine us, a little or a lot. This is a very useful conceptual tool. if subversives are in charge, logically you will get subversion. You don't have to go looking for random events, the weather, astrological clues,  or rampant sloppiness. You just have to say these magic words: the Education Establishment  may pretend they want the schools to succeed... but they don't!

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Our Education Establishment dumbs down K-12 by promoting bogus theories and methods. So we have inferior schools. Meanwhile, it's incredibly easy to fix. Let's dump the bad ideas.

You have to go right back to Pavlov  and his experiments with dogs and children. Brutal, sadistic stuff. And that spirit lives on in our public schools.

Education News - Kudzu envelops everything and eventually destroys everything. In short, kudzu is exactly like Sight-Words.

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
A quick look at why sight-words are just another weed in the garden. The interesting part is why our Education Establishment keeps telling us how nutritious these weeds are.

K-12: the Education Establishment squabble among themselves | Improve Education | Scoop.it

At a recent top-secret conference in posh St. Barts, high-ranking officials in the K-12 universe argued bitterly about the future of American education: Professor

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Three top education commissars argue over just how abused and crippled the public has to be, in order for the left to achieve their dreams. Satire.

Community leaders must be more involved in education, or there is no hope

Community leaders must be more involved in education, or there is no hope | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
One big realization the last several years is that the high-minded people who used to run the society have stepped aside.

That leaves the stage empty for low-minded hacks. They can, for example, take over education and force it to serve their ideological interests.

We need those high-minded people-- the people who want what's best for the whole society-- to get back in the game. And help return education to what it should be. The Education Establishment now in charge will not do this.

Be a real "social justice  warrior"-- help save our public schools.

 Short article explains the situation.

Articles: K-12 and the Other RINO | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Reading In Name Only-- that's RINO.  I woke up with this idea in my head, this play on words, and liked it so much,  I had to write it. You see, that's what sight-words are:  Reading In Name Only. Kids waste years and suffer almost unimaginable anxieties. They can't seem to get the hang of this thing that some people say is so easy. The reason is that the schools are using a method that doesn't work. It's reading in name only. So wonderfully diabolical but our Education Establishment gets away with it.

Articles: K-12 and the New York Times: Forget the Rules

Articles: K-12 and the New York Times: Forget the Rules | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
What's truth got to do with it? My big theme is that schools don't teach facts and our media don't report facts. These are two sides of the same thing, an absolute lust to win.

The New York Times makes it's all very clear, all dimensions of it, by loudly announcing that it's okay to lie. They say that defeating Trump is so important it's okay to lie. But they say this about lots of things! Whenever, in fact, it suits them.

Harvard's slogan is one we need to stay with: Veritas.

What to teach. How to teach...Two different issues

What to teach. How to teach...Two different issues | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Most discussions about educations blur two separate questions: What should be taught? And how should it be taught?

Typically, our Education Establishment prefers to conflate and confuse. When everything is murky, and nobody has a sure grasp of what's going on in K-12 schools, the public won't see even the obvious ways of improving education. Decline will continue indefinitely
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
The dysfunction of our public schools is not accidental. Our so-called experts use an array of techniques.

This article boils the whole mess down to two main strategies. Parents need to know this.

Public schools are a threat to national security

Public schools are a threat to national security | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Judging by columns that appear occasionally in our newspapers, the Defense Department is not happy with the quality of students coming out of our K-12 system.

The young are not in good physical shape; they don't have constructive personal values; and they are uninformed about history and the world. In short, they are badly educated and often unfit for service in the military
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Really fascinating issue. Public schools have gotten so bad, they are a threat to national security.  70% of high school graduates are unacceptable for military service, due to various  deficiencies.

Who better than the big, bad military to tell our big, very bad Education Establishment to shape up?

PLAY 60 is a great idea….Now, how about READ 60? | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Education News - Every day children will read for a total of 60 minutes— in the classroom, while doing

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
The reading crisis in K-12 was artificially caused and can be easily fixed. PLAY 60 suggests that all children be encouraged to read for 60 minutes each day--in the classroom, doing homework, or on their free time. The truth is, most American kids don't read an hour a day. Many of them cannot read...

Everyone should "oppose" public education

Everyone should "oppose" public education | Improve Education | Scoop.it

It's a long-running motif in American intellectual history. Critics of public schools are said to be misinformed, vicious people who want only to destroy education.

In short, reformers are not trying to help. Rather, they "oppose" public education. We are told this by our Education Establishment, that is, the powerful ideologues who actually make schools the mess they are

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Another goofy little sophistry: anyone who criticizes the decline of public schools must be against public education in general. Not exactly logical. But all too effective in silencing critics.

Facts and knowledge are what public schools should focus on. Instead they spend their time concocting sneaky sophistries to justify ignoring facts and knowledge.

They say the Internet knows everything, therefore your kids can stop learning. What rubbish. The fact that they dare to say it shows you how far the rot has gone.

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Public schools promise improvement. It won't happen. Parents have to inform themselves about what's going on, get involved, and take back the schools.

The first step is to realize that our Education Establishment is the problem; these people are not going to help unless dragged kicking and screaming into the process.

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Traditionally, American schools focused on the teaching of facts and knowledge. We have drifted away from this, resulting in the mediocre schools we have now.

Far-left educators do not care about facts and knowledge. They want to emphasize politically correct opinions and social justice teachings.

This article looks at a major player on each side of the debate.

An unfurnished mind is a terrible place to live | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Thomas Jefferson made the gloomy prediction that we can be ignorant or free, not both. Given how ignorant the country has become, our prospects are sinking.

K-12: Three Card Monte

K-12: Three Card Monte | Improve Education | Scoop.it

Welcome to the land of the giant hustle...I saw my first exhibition of three-card Monte on Manhattan's Upper West Side, a dozen blocks from

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
An ingenious conflation of a famous street hustle named Three Card Monte with the typical bogus reading instruction found in our public schools. In both cases, the victims always hope that they can beat the game and move up in life.

In fact, the victims don't have a chance. To really appreciate this piece, you might want to look at the little video, about four minutes. The  camera shows you the guy's hands close-up. But you don't have a chance of beating the hustle. Similarly, when a first grader looks at lists of sight words, and feels himself falling further and further from ever being able to read, he has no hope of explaining what the hell has been done to him. I say hell because that's where these pedagogical frauds must come from.

Public schools sabotaged by bogus reading instruction

Public schools sabotaged by bogus reading instruction | Improve Education | Scoop.it

The Reading Wars in the United States go back to roughly 1930. That's when the common-sense phonics approach was demonized and discarded. Every officially certified expert brayed a new song: phonics is old-fashioned; Look-say (or sight-words as it was also called) is the wonderful new way to learn to read

Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
A brief history of illiteracy in the US. Education officials deliberately chose the worst method and kept it in play for 80 years.

Parents of America! Pay Attention! - Saving Our Future

Parents of America! Pay Attention! - Saving Our Future | Improve Education | Scoop.it
Now, be good parents and keep out of things you don’t comprehend. Preparing the young for their future roles in our complex society is a difficult task.
Bruce Deitrick Price's insight:
Why are K-12 schools in decline? One reason is that the people who control these schools are arrogantly dedicated to their own ideological goals. They pretend to care about education for children. What they really care about is transforming the entire society, using children as a tool to achieve that transformation.
