The Difference between Gamification and Game-Based Learning

The Difference between Gamification and Game-Based Learning | Impromptu MOOC | Scoop.it
By Steven Isaacs Have you tried to gamify your classroom? Do you incorporate game-based learning into your curriculum? Gamification and game-based learning have become buzzwords in education yet some general confusion still exists regarding what each is and what each is not. I would love to clear up any misconceptions. Gamification Gamification is the idea of adding game elements to a nongame situation. Corporate reward programs are a good example. They reward users for certain behaviors. Starbu

Esos cambios permanecen.

Is it possible to blend cMOOCs and xMOOCs approach? George Siemens says no, but it is possible to create synergies between different  parallel layers...I think that real paths of real students could be something more complexe than we can imagine: if they are allowed to do it, perhaps they  will mix  the two layers in very personal and different ways in continuous evolution during the learning experience...what do you think about it?

KCenter SKEMA's curator insight, May 20, 2014 12:30 PM

"the difference between xMOOCs & cMOOCs and possible ways to blend them.

The interest in making xMOOCs more like cMOOCs (a few silly folks have called it MOOC 2.0 – haha) seems to be growing. In particular, MOOC providers are adding “social” in the same way that vitamins are added to food, “Now, with beta-carotene”! After much discussion at our designjam, I’ve concluded that cMOOCs and xMOOCs are incompatible. They cannot be blended. Pedagogically and philosophically, they are too different. It’s like trying to make a cat a dog. Entertaining, perhaps, but a fruitless venture."

Project Planning a MOOC

The course teams involved with our MOOCs included experienced academics with familiarity in developing materials on a learning platform. Nonetheless, for each of them it was their first experience of MOOCs, as it was for the project planning team.

Delivering a MOOC

A range of styles and learning methods were adopted by the four MOOCs, appropriate to the subject matter covered. A MOOC structure of six weeks and 5-10 student effort hours per week of study appeared to be just right for the majority of students (55%). Some considerations for future delivery include:

< Well designed announcements at the beginning and end of each week that articulate with the topic coverage, learning activities and assessment methods can be effective at maintaining student interest and motivation.

< Management of forum threads and posts is a critical factor in dealing with massive scale short courses to ensure the majority of students are not affected negatively by the behaviour of a small number of the community, while preserving the openness of the discussion areas.

< The Coursera platform tools are significant and comprehensive in terms of plotting overall student activity, allowing evaluation of assessment data, as well as usage statistics on video resources and other learning activities; however, further refinement of these tools to enable both students and teaching staff to understand their progression at an individual level is necessary (and underway).

Why do so many Moodle courses suck?

Why do so many Moodle courses suck? | Impromptu MOOC | Scoop.it

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Donna Farren's curator insight, August 1, 2014 8:16 AM

Nik makes some great points about Moodle - or really putting any content online - there has to be instructional design training, online teaching training or blended teaching training and how to select content for online delivery.  technical training alone is not enough.

Interesting observation - echoes my own experience

Mikko Hakala's curator insight, August 7, 2014 5:40 PM

Problems and possibilities of Moodle (and other similar platforms) outlined by Nik Peachey:

* Why Moodle courses often suck?

Not so intuitive platform to work with, lack of teacher training and skills to create online learning material (I agree with these points), excess security issues.

* What to do to improve.

* Comment about ready-made courses.

There are various problems, for example these often contain little student-teacher or peer interaction. I agree that the ready-made digital material, in my experience, is not very personalisable (and therefore difficult to teach in an inspired way).

* How to develop your Moodle skills?

The post gives 9 links to practical video tutorials (how to create a quiz, add a youtube, etc.). There are also free Moodle platforms to practice.

Jim Lerman's curator insight, August 20, 12:55 PM

I'm on a personal campaign to add 2 levels above Creating to Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy (don't forget he wrote about 3 domains of learning...Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor). I believe our field tends to overemphasize the Cognitive domain at the expense of the other 2, and to the detriment of learners.

Anyhow, the 2 levels above Creating that I'm concerned about are: Reflecting and Sharing. My reasoning goes like this:

Reflecting Once we go through all 6 levels (and they are not hierarchical, a learning sequence can start or end with any of them), if we want students to enhance their metacognition, it is important for us to build in reflective experiences. Such experiences enhance students' abilities to be more self-aware of how they learn and the strategies that do or don't work well for them.

Sharing - We teachers often remark that our knowledge of a particular topic solidifies when we teach it to someone else...the act of sharing brings out our awareness of nuances, relationships, perceptions, modes of expression/communication, and our interpersonal skills of working with others; all things that are very important to people's success in our current era. Our students deserve to become proficient in sharing effectively.

My 2 cents.

Half an Hour: Assessment in MOOCs

Half an Hour: Assessment in MOOCs | Impromptu MOOC | Scoop.it

First of all, the MOOCs I have worked on have not focused on assessment - they have been courses, yes, with a small number (20 or so) taking them for credit, but the vast majority of participants auditing. So the question of marking term papers never came up. And like you, I would not contemplate multiple-choice exams in humanities and literature courses.

If you really need assessment, a few solutions have been proposed and, to a limited extend, tried out:
