When you design a circuit board, you first draw the schematics, then the PCB layout, and when you are happy with the result, output Gerber files, and send them to a company who will make a board for you. The last step usually takes a few days, and when you get it back the board may not work as expected, and you have to modify the PCB layout again, and request new boards, further delaying your project. Some students of NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering realized this issue, when only one out of eight teams managed to complete a EEG project on time mainly due to production delays as manufacturers took about 10 days to make and ship back the board. So some of them came together with one of their professor created BotFactory company and came up with Squink, a personal electronic factory, powered by the BeagleBone Black, that can deliver fully assembled boards from Gerber files in a few minutes.

The robots nicknamed “Minibuilders” are capable of constructing entire structures from the ground up. The IAAC concept differs from the rest, in that the structures are 3D printed in one continuous process directly on site. The robots print the structure layer by layer, and not in modular parts that need to be shipped from the factory to the construction site.

A la fin de cet été, j’ai reçu ce mail dans ma boîte : « Je vais lancer un service en ligne de « reproduction d’organe (mâle) » dans n’importe quelle taille grâce à l’impression 3D. Ca s’appellera Photocopine et le principe sera très simple : à partir de 3 à 5 photos, je réalise un modèle 3D de ‘Monsieur’. Je fabriquerai ensuite un moule en 3D dans la taille que le/la client(e) désire, entre 10 et 35 centimètres. »

Ultrasonic additive manufacturing, a solid-state printing process, uses waves of sound to merge layers of metal foil. As a result, true, full density metallurgical bonds can be created for a variety of metals. When combined with other additive and subtractive processes, a number of highly complex geometries can be created and integrated. It would not be possible to create these complex forms with other conventional subtractive manufacturing processes when performed alone. UAM can create hollow, latticed, or honeycombed internal structures in addition. A number of different types of sensors have been successfully integrated into components using UAM processes, including thermocouples, strain sensors, accelerometers, and pressure transducers. One type of sensor, utilizing fiber optic Bragg gratings to give precise strain measurements, has been embedded in aluminum, increasing the amount of time between necessary maintenance operations.

The child had been suffering from a common childhood cancer known as neuroblastoma, and although cancer treatments had been able to control the spread of the disease, a tumour had formed in the stomach.
