Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Technology in schools and classrooms
Personalization of learning through UDL and differentiated instruction
Performance assessments are real-world scenarios that reflect the ambiguity of real-world challenges. They require higher-order thinking and problem solving. They are concluded with authentic performance.
One key part of the Common Core is performance assessments. One question many may have is just what is performance assessment. This post provides a number of descriptions of performance assessments including ones from ETS, five criteria from Wiggins and McTighe based on Understanding by Design and ASCD.
Performance tasks may include project-based learning, drawings, videos, and more.
There is also a discussion on four reasons to use performance assessment. They are:
* Personalized Learing
* Formative Assessment
* Competency Education
* Standards-based Education

How do you individualize? Does a graphic like this guide instruction, curriculum, lessons or all the above? Most teachers are visual learners, as are their students; wouldn't it be fun to have students create personalized graphic like this to outline their own individualized pathway to learning?

Math Performance Assessment Modules were developed by cross-district design teams during the Summer of 2012, piloted during the 2012-13 school year, and revised based on feedback from the Pilot. They are directly aligned to both the Common Core State Standards and the SMARTER Balanced assessment specifications, and can be used in a variety of means–as diagnostic pre-assessments, as mid-instruction formative assessments, or as mini summative benchmark assessments.
Then I started googling around, and my ignorance turned into confusion: The Common Core itself is little more than two lists — one for Mathematics and one for Language Arts — describing the knowledge and skills that children should be acquiring"
We must prepare our children for the 21st Century. These are the skills they will need. The standards emphasize higher level critical thinking skills. They include Speaking and Listening skills, which will be valuable in any career. Remember that many of the jobs of the 21st Century haven't been created yet. My son's job, writing apps for an iPhone, didn't exist when he was in high school!
Couldn't resist sharing this for teachers back East . This will be a motivating topic for students to share their learning with family members.
