The Carbon Cycle : Feature Articles

The Carbon Cycle : Feature Articles | Impacts of Carbon Emissions on the Ecosystem | Scoop.it
Carbon flows between the atmosphere, land, and ocean in a cycle that encompasses nearly all life and sets the thermostat for Earth's climate. By burning fossil fuels, people are changing the carbon cycle with far-reaching consequences.
ETAD 470's insight:

I learned where the carbon that humans release goes in the atmosphere. 45% of carbon given off so far has stayed in the atmosphere which is causing the air on earth to increase in temperature. 55% of the carbon has been taken up by the ocean which has caused the ocean to have a more acidic environment.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions | Impacts of Carbon Emissions on the Ecosystem | Scoop.it
Canada is one of the world’s largest GHG emitters. Why has Canada not been able to meet its GHG reduction targets? What contributes most to greenhouse gas emissions in Canada? What can Canada do to reduce GDH emissions?
ETAD 470's insight:

Through this article I learned that Canada ranks 15th out of 17 developed countries for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Carbon dioxide is the primary GHG emitted with 81 per cent of Canada's total GHG emissions coming from combustion sources. Despite Canada's effort to reduce carbon emissions we receive a "D" grade as a country and as of 2008 GHG emissions are 17% higher than 1990 records. Canada is currently regulating gas emissions on vehicles and will eventual place regulations on coal-fired electricity.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions | Climate Change | US EPA | Impacts of Carbon Emissions on the Ecosystem | Scoop.it
ETAD 470's insight:

This article contains background information on carbon dioxide emissions in the United States and the carbon cycle. The article discusses sources and sinks for the excess carbon in the carbon cycle. The main human activities that emit CO2 in developed countries are electricity, transportation, and industrial processes.  The article offers examples of how emissions can be reduced which include energy efficient appliances, energy conservation and fuel switching (using renewable resources).
