"The Digital Skills Observatory project will engage 150 first-time smartphone users in Kenya who will be divided into two groups: one group will receive digital skills training and access to software prototypes, and the second group will receive no intervention. During the 12-month period, DDD and Mozilla will conduct regular interviews with all participants and collect their experiences and mobile data usage to gauge differences. Periodically, Mozilla will create and iterate on curriculum and software to facilitate effective learning, which will be distributed during digital skills workshops."

To date, using this approach, we have placed approximately 17, 000 youth into jobs and trained approximately 50, 000 with relevant skills related to the digital economy. Notably, we have seen the greatest traction in South Africa, where we have placed approximately 80 percent of our high potential but disadvantaged youth (HPDYs). As a result of these successes, we believe there is an opportunity to engage even further in South Africa in our effort to achieve our goals, while continuing to support ongoing work across Africa.

"But when Connor Smith flies out to Southern Zambia later this month, not only will they have the means to light their school buildings, but they'll also be getting into their stride using some of the solar-power computer systems which they've been donated. The 21-year-old works for Swansea-based tech firm Giakonda IT, which has been supplying and installing computer equipment to rural schools in the town. To date, nine schools have benefited from the project, which also involves Hub Cymru Africa, the British Council, and Swansea firm S & C Electric, but over the next few years they hope to roll it out to a further 26 schools."

Rowdy Orbit Impact plans to recruit a class of 50 blacks and latinos for a 34-week training program in technology and data skills. The company will be working with local employers to figure out which skills their workers need and to line up jobs that will pay at least $40,000 a year.
