OverDrive looks to drive home impact of library e-book lending on book sales | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

“We want to demonstrate once and for all the enormous influence of the library demographic, and that when libraries put an ebook in their catalog it serves a valuable role in increasing exposure and engagement with an author's work,” said Steve Potash, OverDrive's CEO.

Journal Usage Statistics Portal (JUSP) use case: JUSP for Further Education

With many Further Education colleges now providing Higher Education courses, there has been a growing need for FE libraries and learning resource centres to provide access to academic journals and e-books. As well as subscribing to selected individual journals, FE colleges are also taking advantage of Jisc Collections offers for larger publisher collections.

1) UK HEIs really aren’t interested in subscribing to walled garden adaptive learning systems in the way private colleges in the US might be – almost regardless of price.

2) UK universities would be very, very interested in providing personal copies of (interactive please!) ePub versions of all core texts to all their students if they could get them at the right price.

I have literally just wrote a reflective piece on how i felt many years ago that school libraries were for academics. This read is something that I have been searching for. I hope it works out and that many other schools take this on board.

Why social media is critical for this area of campus - eCampus News

Why social media is critical for this area of campus - eCampus News | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

"Mainly, libraries use their social media for promotion of events and services, but an increasing emphasis on taking advantage of the ability to receive feedback from patrons has led to communication being a major objective forthings such as collection development and customer service. Additionally, using social media to present resources in new and flexible ways is a growing priority."

Anthony Beal's insight:

"The report notes that using social media for the above purposes comes at a low cost and serves to build a sense of community between a library and its users, to support co-development of collections and help keep librarians updated on industry news and initiatives."

Victoria's new library grabs ideas from farmhouses and the Apple Store

Victoria's new library grabs ideas from farmhouses and the Apple Store | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
“What we’ve been able to do here is design a smaller library that has the same level of resources of a much larger one,” McCleary said this week during a tour of the new facility. “The way we did that is through the ‘digital-in-person’ concept, which is about using the library space for people to interact with each other and the staff, rather than for shelves of books, which are migrating to the digital realm through e-books.”

Save Lincolnshire Libraries stage protest at County Offices - 27-01-15

Save Lincolnshire Libraries stage protest at County Offices - 27-01-15 | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Save Lincolnshire Libraries campaigners are staging a protest at Lincolnshire County Council’s offices next week.

The demonstration is at 9.15am on Tuesday, January 27, ahead of the authority’s library scrutiny committee meeting at 10am.

Six months ago a High Court judge criticised the county council’s plan to turn 30 libraries into community hubs run by volunteers.

But now the authority is proposing what campaigners say is fundamentally the same plan.

Millennials Are Out-Reading Older Generations

Millennials Are Out-Reading Older Generations | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

Adrienne Lafrance writes: "Some 88 percent of Americans younger than 30 said they read a book in the past year compared with 79 percent of those older than 30. At the same time, American readers' relationship with public libraries is changing—with younger readers less likely to see public libraries as essential in their communities."

Are publishers really 'hoodwinking' academics?

Are publishers really 'hoodwinking' academics? | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Our anonymous academic claims that dubious publishing practices are being used to trick libraries and researchers. But the experts disagree

Last week’s Academics Anonymous revealed that researchers are being pushed to publish books that few people ever read, but nonetheless bring big profits for publishers, who sell them to libraries all over the world. One editor explained that the company would expect to sell at least 300 copies of each book, priced at about £80 each – totalling £24,000.

What Would An Open Access Academic Library Look Like, and What Would an Open Access Academic Librarian Do?

In the context of something else, I mooted whether a particular project required an “open access academic library” as a throwaway comment, but it’s a phrase that’s been niggling at me, along with the associated “open access academic librarian”, so I’ll let my fingers do the talking and see what words come out…

Anthony Beal's insight:

Must admit I had not considered all the ins and outs of setting up and open access library, lots of food for thought.

A major conservation programme has led to exciting discoveries at a historic library.

The Future of Libraries Has Little to Do with Books

The Future of Libraries Has Little to Do with Books | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
In a digital age that has left book publishers reeling, libraries in the world’s major cities seem poised for a comeback, though it’s one that has very little to do with books. The Independent Library Report—published in December by the U.K.’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport—found that libraries across the nation are re-inventing themselves by increasingly becoming “vibrant and attractive community hubs,” focusing on the “need to create digital literacy—and in an ideal world, digital fluency.”
