Exeter Central Library has reopened following an 18 month, £4m refit.
One of the most interesting innovations is the introduction of a 'Fab Lab', as well as a new Business and Information Hub to support local businesses. The 'Fab Lab' is believed to be the first of its kind in a UK public library, though a growing feature of libraries in the US and other countries. The Fab Lab, or fabrication laboratory, is a digital workshop equipped with laser-cutters, 3D printers and scanners, 3D milling machines, electronics bench and programming and design tools, where users can “make almost anything”.
Anthony Beal's insight:
I would be interested to see the new "Fab Lab" which could be the first of its kind in a UK public library

The Jisc Regional Support Centres (Northern, North West and Yorkshire & Humber) are proud to present this year’s annual Learning Resources Conference 2013, with keynote speaker Leo Appleton, Associate Director of Library Services, Liverpool John Moores University.
We want the UK Government to reduce the term of copyright protection in unpublished texts to the author’s lifetime plus 70 years.
Why it's important
At the moment the duration of copyright in certain unpublished works is to the end of 2039, regardless of how old the work is.
No other country in Europe has such restrictive provisions. European institutions are able to use such important historical material freely and lawfully, but in the UK we cannot.
As part of the First World War Centenary many organisations want to make unpublished works such as diaries and letters accessible to the public. Because they are still under copyright protection they cannot do so without permission from the rights holder.
The once-prestigious Delhi Public Library is now a shadow of its past glory, with nearly half of its permanent posts lying vacant. Perhaps libraries no more qualify to be a priority in Indian universities and colleges. Adroit planners have endorsed its neglect and shifted the focus to e-resources. These resources are, of course, important, but they cannot substitute the ethos a library creates. In countries ahead of us in education, the maintenance of the library as a special place is regarded as key to inducting the young into a community of knowledge.
SLIC commissioned a review of available evidence of the impact of school libraries on achievement and learning. The focus is on school library services in secondary education. The outcomes will inform SLIC and CILIPS strategies in support of school library provision in Scotland.
It’s been just over a month since the Publisher’s Association launched a year long e-lending pilot in partnership with 4 libraries in the UK, and the early results are showing that ebook borrowers are also buyers. Janene Cox, the president of the Society of Chief Librarians (SCL), was speaking at the London Book Fair last week when she told The Bookseller that “people who loan books, buy books”.
The Pierce County Library System is seeking people to record interviews about how their lives have been changed by the library.
As a result of winning a national medal for museum and library service last year, the library system will work with the oral history project StoryCorps in March to record 18 interviews about the library’s impact.
Most Americans feel that public libraries have done a good job embracing new technology, but are split on whether libraries are as essential as they were in the past for finding information, according to The Pew Research Center.
Ford Heights has a library district that collects about $20,000 a year from taxpayers who live in one of the poorest communities in the state.
But Ford Heights has no library.
The district was forced to close its free-standing library about 20 years ago when it couldn't come up with the money to maintain the building, and it was eventually razed. A state-of-the-art library in neighboring Glenwood then offered services for a while...

“We want to demonstrate once and for all the enormous influence of the library demographic, and that when libraries put an ebook in their catalog it serves a valuable role in increasing exposure and engagement with an author's work,” said Steve Potash, OverDrive's CEO.
