Libraries still key to communities - Scottish Headlines - Fife Today

Libraries still key to communities - Scottish Headlines - Fife Today | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
More than three-quarters of Scots think libraries are still important or essential to their community, according to a poll.

Libraries need to be able to demonstrate the impact they have on a wide range of social indicators such as health and wellbeing, employment, and digital inclusion."

Author Ian Rankin said: "Technology and changes in the way we live are impacting hugely on what communities want and need from libraries. It's crucial that the services they provide adapt and evolve so that they remain as treasured in the future as they are now, providing a free yet invaluable service that underpins education, creativity and lifelong learning."

The impact of institutional decay

The impact of institutional decay | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

The once-prestigious Delhi Public Library is now a shadow of its past glory, with nearly half of its permanent posts lying vacant. Perhaps libraries no more qualify to be a priority in Indian universities and colleges. Adroit planners have endorsed its neglect and shifted the focus to e-resources. These resources are, of course, important, but they cannot substitute the ethos a library creates. In countries ahead of us in education, the maintenance of the library as a special place is regarded as key to inducting the young into a community of knowledge.

It’s been just over a month since the Publisher’s Association launched a year long e-lending pilot in partnership with 4 libraries in the UK, and the early results are showing that ebook borrowers are also buyers. Impoverished suburb has a library district, but no library

Impoverished suburb has a library district, but no library | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

Ford Heights has a library district that collects about $20,000 a year from taxpayers who live in one of the poorest communities in the state.

But Ford Heights has no library.

The district was forced to close its free-standing library about 20 years ago when it couldn't come up with the money to maintain the building, and it was eventually razed. A state-of-the-art library in neighboring Glenwood then offered services for a while...

Anthony Beal's insight:

Designing Libraries - Redesigned Exeter Central Library opens

Designing Libraries - Redesigned Exeter Central Library opens | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Exeter Central Library has reopened following an 18 month, £4m refit.

One of the most interesting innovations is the introduction of a 'Fab Lab', as well as a new Business and Information Hub to support local businesses. The 'Fab Lab' is believed to be the first of its kind in a UK public library, though a growing feature of libraries in the US and other countries. The Fab Lab, or fabrication laboratory, is a digital workshop equipped with laser-cutters, 3D printers and scanners, 3D milling machines, electronics bench and programming and design tools, where users can “make almost anything”.

Anthony Beal's insight:

I would be interested to see the new "Fab Lab" which could be the first of its kind in a UK public library
