3D Systems Presents 100 Libraries & Museums Participating in MakerLab Club with New Cube 3D Printers

3D Systems Presents 100 Libraries & Museums Participating in MakerLab Club with New Cube 3D Printers | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

It’s been quite some time since libraries had a program introducing free use of progressive new technology in their buildings—harkening back to the advent of PCs, use of the internet, and even printers. Some of us may remember what a big deal that was back when everyone did not have a system at home...

Save Lincolnshire Libraries stage protest at County Offices - 27-01-15

Save Lincolnshire Libraries stage protest at County Offices - 27-01-15 | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Save Lincolnshire Libraries campaigners are staging a protest at Lincolnshire County Council’s offices next week.

The demonstration is at 9.15am on Tuesday, January 27, ahead of the authority’s library scrutiny committee meeting at 10am.

Six months ago a High Court judge criticised the county council’s plan to turn 30 libraries into community hubs run by volunteers.

But now the authority is proposing what campaigners say is fundamentally the same plan.

Sense and Sensibility: Why Librarians Remain Essential to Our Schools

Sense and Sensibility: Why Librarians Remain Essential to Our Schools | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Unless lawmakers can be made to understand the critical role these and other educational professionals play in contributing to schools in which we can all be confident and proud, then many of these positions will remain in jeopardy to the detriment o...
Anthony Beal's insight:

I like this quote from the post:

"Although not always regarded as "teaching" in the conventional sense, the ways in which librarians assist students may in fact be one of the most authentic forms of instruction."

Free our history | CILIP

Free our history | CILIP | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

We want the UK Government to reduce the term of copyright protection in unpublished texts to the author’s lifetime plus 70 years.

Why it's important

At the moment the duration of copyright in certain unpublished works is to the end of 2039, regardless of how old the work is.

No other country in Europe has such restrictive provisions. European institutions are able to use such important historical material freely and lawfully, but in the UK we cannot.

As part of the First World War Centenary many organisations want to make unpublished works such as diaries and letters accessible to the public. Because they are still under copyright protection they cannot do so without permission from the rights holder.

The impact of institutional decay

The impact of institutional decay | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it

The once-prestigious Delhi Public Library is now a shadow of its past glory, with nearly half of its permanent posts lying vacant. Perhaps libraries no more qualify to be a priority in Indian universities and colleges. Adroit planners have endorsed its neglect and shifted the focus to e-resources. These resources are, of course, important, but they cannot substitute the ethos a library creates. In countries ahead of us in education, the maintenance of the library as a special place is regarded as key to inducting the young into a community of knowledge.

UK Library eBook Pilot Shows Library Loans Drive Sales - The Digital Reader

It’s been just over a month since the Publisher’s Association launched a year long e-lending pilot in partnership with 4 libraries in the UK, and the early results are showing that ebook borrowers are also buyers. Janene Cox, the president of the Society of Chief Librarians (SCL), was speaking at the London Book Fair last week when she told The Bookseller that “people who loan books, buy books”.

The Future of Libraries Has Little to Do with Books

The Future of Libraries Has Little to Do with Books | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
In a digital age that has left book publishers reeling, libraries in the world’s major cities seem poised for a comeback, though it’s one that has very little to do with books. The Independent Library Report—published in December by the U.K.’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport—found that libraries across the nation are re-inventing themselves by increasingly becoming “vibrant and attractive community hubs,” focusing on the “need to create digital literacy—and in an ideal world, digital fluency.”

DIY libraries taking off in Herefordshire

DIY libraries taking off in Herefordshire | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
A FARMING family on the welsh borders is making it its mission to keep West Herefordshire youngsters reading, setting up their own library at their farm shop.

The Prices are lifelong literature lovers and mum Ceri said that growing up libraries were just something that she took for granted.

And, worried about the “huge impact” library closures could have, she decided to set up her own kids’ library at the family’s Church Barn Farm Shop, near Whitney-on-Wye.

Designing Libraries - Redesigned Exeter Central Library opens

Designing Libraries - Redesigned Exeter Central Library opens | Impact of libraries | Scoop.it
Exeter Central Library has reopened following an 18 month, £4m refit.

One of the most interesting innovations is the introduction of a 'Fab Lab', as well as a new Business and Information Hub to support local businesses. The 'Fab Lab' is believed to be the first of its kind in a UK public library, though a growing feature of libraries in the US and other countries. The Fab Lab, or fabrication laboratory, is a digital workshop equipped with laser-cutters, 3D printers and scanners, 3D milling machines, electronics bench and programming and design tools, where users can “make almost anything”.

Anthony Beal's insight:

I would be interested to see the new "Fab Lab" which could be the first of its kind in a UK public library
