Civil conflicts are associated with the global climate
Using data from 1950 to 2004, we show that the probability of new civil conflicts arising throughout the tropics doubles during El Niño years relative to La Niña years. This result, which indicates that ENSO may have had a role in 21% of all civil conflicts since 1950, is the first demonstration that the stability of modern societies relates strongly to the global climate." http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v476/n7361/full/nature10311.html

One of the most interesting takeaways from the White House’s annual “Economic Report of the President” released Friday afternoon was its call for new data based on the changing complexion of both the economy and the job market.
Chapter 2: The Year in Review and the Years Ahead Data needed: “Despite recent innovations in the collection of primary source data, there are still conceptual issues pertaining to the appraisal and definition of services that remain unresolved. As an example, improvements in health care have contributed to longer life spans and better quality of life, but there is not a consensus about how to value and incorporate these benefits in a national income accounting framework.” [emphasis added]

These are the kinds of mistakes that would not be made if companies were more sophisticated in valuing intangible assets, such as trust along the supply chain, and market knowledge. At the height of the exodus of US manufacturers, Michael Porter wrote The Competitive Advantage of Nations, which explained how anticipatory and sophisticated demand of workers created leadership edge.
