That will be interesting to check them out in a while and see if it caught up, found its audience, and eventually generated worthy user interaction.

Because that's what it always come down to: is there a perceivable added-value to all these? - except the PR bragging right of doing things differently.

Neil deGrasse Tyson in Canada Twice this Month! | Immortality and Consciousness | Scoop.it

Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of the world’s best-known, and popular astrophysicists, gave two talks at Canadian universities this month, and his fan club is expanding across the country.
Though he often seems to be most well known for his role in the demotion of Pluto’s planetary status, incredibly interesting tweets, and a variety of of interesting internet “memes,” Dr. Tyson also does his fair share of educating, and strives to participate often in open ended Q&A sessions...

Quantified-self movement aims to shift health care from reactive to proactive

Quantified-self movement aims to shift health care from reactive to proactive | Immortality and Consciousness | Scoop.it

Will wearable devices go the way of the Walkman, or the way of the Web? A panel of local leaders in the quantified-self space say the inflection point toward the latter has already happened, and the health care industry will be one of the first sectors to see its transformative effects.

“Last year, 2013, I think this was when we really saw the whole movement go mainstream,” said Larry Smarr, founding director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology and the moderator of an MIT Enterprise Forum on the quantified self on Wednesday. “I think you can see we basically have reached takeoff in the market; when you see these kinds of things, this kind of shakeout, this is how the market tells you that you’re at takeoff.”

Those “things” Smarr was referring to include the $18 million Series A funds raised by MyFitnessPal, the $70 million raised by Fitbit and the sale of BodyMedia to Jawbone for $100 million. Smarr said Qualcomm Life estimates the total size of the mobile health market will be between $30 billion and $60 billion by 2015.

“That may seem a little bit out of reach for a year or two, but we have a lot of stuff going on all over the world right now that amounts to quite the sizeable market,” said Rick Valencia, senior vice president and general manager at Qualcomm Life. “And the rate of transformation, it seems really slow right now … but I think five years, 10 years from now, we’re going to look back and we won’t believe the speed at which things moved, the rate at which things transformed, and the rate at which the system allowed itself to adopt these new tools.”

So what exactly are these tools, and what is their purpose?

“In a lot of cases we’re not talking about completely new ways to deliver care; we’re not talking about completely new protocols or completely new drugs; we’re just talking about a faster, easier, simpler, more engaging way to deliver the same type of care that we use today,” Valencia said.

This is being accomplished through mobile and wireless technologies, like MD Revolution and Pear.

Pear, a free iPhone and Android app that analyzes your biofeedback in real time as you exercise using one if its coach’s routines, tells you how to adjust your workout based on your heart rate to get to the desired zones prescribed in the workout, and reach your health and fitness goals. President and co-founder Kristian Rauhala said the team came up with the idea when they realized how difficult it was to monitor your body during a workout, with or without a heart rate monitor, and found that fitness suffered as a result.

La Jolla-based MD Revolution created a system whereby participants earn points for healthy activities such as exercising or eating balanced, nutritional meals, and track a plethora of factors including visceral fat, body oxygen content and heart rate to get a complete picture of their health and find ways to improve areas where they’re at risk for potential disease or complications.

To MD Revolution’s founder and CEO, Dr. Samir Damani, the quantified-self movement is about much more than a fun way to track habits or motivate people to exercise -- it’s about a health care revolution.

“Why does any of this matter?,” Damani asked. “The reason why it matters is because, as Larry mentioned, these are lifestyle diseases that are crippling this country. The CDC stated just this year that 200,000 people died that could have been prevented from cardiovascular diseases. Out of those, six out of 10 were under the age of 65. So we’ve got young productive members of society who are dying from diseases that are preventable.

“And the system and the business of medicine has treated the disease. So what we do as doctors is treat disease. We know how to treat it. The problem is now that we have to shift and give greater value … to preventing disease. And prevention is lifestyle.”

The panelists agreed that the massive amounts of data available from self-monitoring will create a shift in the way people think about health, and will ultimately lead to reduced health care costs for the individual and for the nation as a whole.

“When mobile technology comes in to make a service better, it’s kind of an 'Oh wow' moment,” Valencia said. “When mobile technology comes in and changes the experience entirely, the industry entirely, it’s an 'Oh shit' moment. That’s what’s going to happen, we think, over the next several years -- a dramatic transformation of several industries, and of course health care is a big one.”

Frederick WoodruffSociological astrologer Jessica Murray and I sat down for a detailed survey of the ongoing Uranus Pluto square and the upcoming Grand Cross that will twang the USA's horoscope -- this spring -- like a fire alarm.

We focused particularly on the unexpected socioeconomic damage wrought by the ongoing proliferation of technology into every facet of modern life. A condition no one really anticipated, until it was unavoidable and invasive.

If you're interested in reading current affairs, not as a threat, but as a set of givens that we can skillfully maneuver to facilitate a new creative impetus, you'll enjoy this interview.
