"If our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us," said Francis at the service in Saint Peter's Basilica.

Francis has repeatedly warned about rising rates of anti-Christian violence, and his address comes at a time when Christians from ancient communities are fleeing the civil war in Syria and deadly fighting has erupted between the Central African Republic's Christian majority and Muslim minority.

use this when confronted with the lies about this

Carlos Batara's curator insight, June 1, 2013 7:30 PM

Contrary to popular rumor, the immigration population is a plus, not a minus, when it comes to the U.S. health system.

Recent Harvard Medical School points out immigrants contribute more funds into our medical systems than they use.

For several years, at the local, state, and federal levels, anti-immigrant politicians have lamented the huge social costs of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. claiming they are a drain on our public resources like education, law enforcement, and medical care.

Many of them have relied on estimates provided by the anti-immigration Federation for American Immigration Reform, which has pushed the notion that the undocumented population costs the nation as much as $11 billion annually.

The Harvard Medical School report calls the validity of such numbers into question.

There are indications that immigrants make the economy stronger.

For instance, the Harvard study showed that between 2002 and 2009, immigrants contributed $115 billion into Medicare, while only using $28 billion of services.

In another example, the report estimates that in 2009 alone, immigrants contributed 14.7 percent of what was taken in by the Medicare Trust Fund, but only utilized 7.9 percent.

Of course, this study will not silence immigration reform critics and will likely lead to cries of Harvard’s liberal bias – notwithstanding a particular student doctoral thesis supporting the Darwinian notion certain ethnic groups are biologically less capable of intelligent reasoning and thought.

One thing that cannot be denied is that since the ripening Baby Boomer generation will soon be at retirement age, the United States needs the economic contributions of younger immigrant workers, skilled and unskilled to keep programs like Medicare and Social Security going.

Federal judge accuses state of ethical lapses in prison case - The Sacramento Bee

Federal judge accuses state of ethical lapses in prison case - The Sacramento Bee | immigration reform for all | Scoop.it
In a high-stakes bid to wrest control of California's prison system from federal oversight, opposing lawyers for the state and for 33,000 inmates sparred Wednesday over whether the state violated legal ethics by interviewing mentally ill prisoners...

Via Doingtime2
Nora ImmigrationReform Guadalajara's insight:

The lawyers describe the sessions as being conducted in secret despite the legal requirement that they be present for all those tours and interviews.

"They interviewed our mentally ill clients without our knowledge about the case and then they used the evidence (to buttress their claims that conditions in the prisons have improved)," Don Specter, head of the Prison Law Office, told reporters after the hearing.

"They didn't really explain to the mentally ill clients what the purpose of the interviews were, so the inmates had no idea who they were speaking to, they had no idea for the reason."

Those interviews and the 50 expert declarations based on them that were filed with the court by the state now are at the heart of a heated dispute over whether California has made enough progress in improving access to mental health care at a constitutional level inside its prisons.

The inmate attorneys want the declarations thrown out, a move that would cripple the state's efforts in court to rid its self of the 23-year-old class action.
