Gamifying Student Engagement | Edutopia.org | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it

In her TED talk, "Gaming Can Make a Better World," author and researcher Jane McGonigal posits that in game worlds people are "motivated to do something that matters, inspired to collaborate, to cooperate." Video games are interactive and engaging. It's no wonder they are so pervasive with both children and adults!

A recent trend in the business world has been to bring game world elements into the real world. This methodology is referred to as "gamification." According to a Pew Research Center report, gamification is "interactive online design that plays on people's competitive instincts and often incorporates the use of rewards to drive action -- these include virtual rewards such as points, payments, badges, discounts and free gifts; and status indicators such as friend counts, re-tweets, leaderboards, achievement data, progress bars and the ability to level up."

Teaching 21st Century Skills For 21st Century Success Requires An Ecosystem Approach | #eSkills #ICT

Teaching 21st Century Skills For 21st Century Success Requires An Ecosystem Approach | #eSkills #ICT | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it
It is almost universally acknowledged that in order to succeed in the 21st century, students must learn much more than the “three Rs” and basic computer competency.

The term “21st century skills” is used often in educational circles to refer to a range of abilities and competencies that go beyond what has traditionally been taught in the classroom, including problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Others define the term as “information literacy, media literacy, and information, communication and technology literacy.”

More importantly, students need these skills because employers across a huge variety of industries increasingly demand them. A recent McKinsey report indicated that close to 40 percent of employers could not find people with the right skills while 60 percent “complain[ed] of a lack of preparation.” Even jobs that were once considered vocational, such as welding, petroleum production, and even factory work, are now high tech, and require specialized knowledge that includes not only a robust science background and familiarity with the computerized machinery that keeps heavy industry humming, but also critical thinking and collaboration skills. In other words, 21st century job growth is outpacing our ability to develop a prepared workforce, making it more critical than ever to teach these skills.

Teaching 21st Century Skills For 21st Century Success Requires An Ecosystem Approach
Chris Carter's curator insight, July 25, 7:05 PM
I am convinced now that we cannot "put new wine into old wineskins." We need to fundamentally rethink how we conceptualize "school." Bolting on new parts to the old system runs into the problem of the inertia of the old. There is so much to say here. We came into the 21st Century with a model of education that is, practically speaking, a "production" model where teachers stay in front of students and their productivity is measures by hours in front of students multiplied by number of students. The more hours and the more students, the more productive. My school is willing to explore a new paradigm, one in which teaching is modeling how to learn and guiding students toward a lifetime and lifestyle of learning . Such a mindset naturally leads to relational approaches. It is no so much about the numbers, but about learners seeing teachers as learners and learning "guild" leaders, too.

Is your computer too old to run Sim-on-a-Stick? Probably not.

Is your computer too old to run Sim-on-a-Stick? Probably not. | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it

It's not unusual to hear educators say that their computers are not suitable to run virtual worlds. I suspect that idea comes from trying to use a virtual world like Second Life (SL) with a very taxing client like the official Linden Lab viewer. But are those same computers unsuitable to run Sim-on-a-Stick (SoaS)?

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News | Immersive World Technology | Scoop.it

"A love for avocado lattes and Snapchat filters are just a few of the stereotypes following Millennials these days. But students are now pushing back on these generational generalizations, noting that assumptions regarding their attitudes, hobbies, and abilities are hurting them academically. One of the biggest misconceptions students at last week’s New Media Consortium’s Summer Conference (NMC) brought up was the idea that millennials are digital natives.

"Most people have heard this story before: the eight-year-old son teaching his forty-year-old dad how to use some new device or app. However, despite being an allegory of our times, a lot has been said off-the-record about misconceptions regarding students’ technological abilities. In an interview with EdSurge, Alexandra Pickett, the Director of New York State University’s Center for Online Teaching Excellence, noted that many of her students know how to use online platforms such as Twitter and Facebook for fun, but have no idea how to leverage them for academic and professional use. It’s a point the students at NMC echoed."

What we use digital tools for in our daily lives is not what we use them for in classrooms. Neil Selwyn's and Larry Cuban's research have shown that digital tools used poorly do not improve teaching and learning
Chris Carter's curator insight, July 25, 7:17 PM
So true. Born into a digital world, we assume kids know how to navigate it. But really, did you know how to navigate your world when you grew up? Most kids are digital "naives" rather than digital natives, knowing just enough to do what they want to do. When I chaired a student-centered panel at EduTECH Asia in Singapore, the kids said the same thing. We should not unnecessarily put students in a box that assumes they know how to use the tools, to full effect, that the digital world provides.
GwynethJones's curator insight, July 25, 9:39 PM

I'm kinda not surprised by this!
