Your bedroom just got infinite – a VR headset and body-tracking system generates an endless virtual space within the confines of a real physical place
Sandys VR's insight:

I wonder what hardware has been used for this example. Wide area tracking is not easy but possible. 50mx50m with WorldViz PPT optical tracking with up to 8 individual targets (to be extended).

Sandys VR's insight:

I absolutely agree! Without a proper position tracking VR doesn't feel nearly as real as it could be. Today's technology already provides a whole lot of different position tracking devices. A wide range from low-end solutions like the Microsoft Kinect (http://www.vizapps.com/) to high-end wide area optical position tracking (http://www.worldviz.com/products/ppt) are available. I am sure there will be a bunch of different solutions available for Oculus soon. The question I am asking is: Is it Oculus' task to solve that? I personally think this should be a seperate solution. Position tracking integrated in an HMD might not be the best solution (could though).

Interactive 3D protein structures on a virtual reality wall

Interactive 3D protein structures on a virtual reality wall | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it

How do you get to know a protein? How about from the inside out? If you ask chemistry professor James Hinton, "It’s really important that scientists as well as students are able to touch, feel, see … embrace–if you like, these proteins structures”. For decades, with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Hinton has used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to look at protein structure and function. But he wanted to find a way to educate and engage students about his discoveries.

The picture above shows an example of the interactive visualization of proteins from the Protein Data Bank (PDB), using PDB browser software on the C-Wall (virtual reality wall) at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at the University of California, San Diego. The work was performed by Jürgen P. Schulze, project scientist, in collaboration with Jeff Milton, Philip Weber and Professor Philip Bourne of the University of California, San Diego. The software supports collaborative viewing of proteins at multiple sites on the Internet
