What is Augmented Reality?

This type of reality should not be confused with virtual reality. Virtual reality creates computer-generated environments for you to interact in while maintaining a sense of immersion.
Sandys VR's insight:

Nice insight into AR. The head-set they're using in the video (nVisor ST50) is a neat device, used it myself many times before. Huge advantage: optical see-through which makes it faster because you actually see through the lenses and don't need a camera to process the image first. Downside: You still need a camera to track fiducials or other AR tracking points to track the position of the virtual overlay. A solution for this is the VideoVision from WorldViz: http://www.worldviz.com/products/augmented-reality/videovision

By the way, this can be combined with any HMD, it just needs a flat surface to mount.

I'm still very curios about this device. It looks very interesting and I've had the chance to talk with Jan Goetgelik (I always spell it wrong...) one of the founders. But I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet. It looks very exhausting like walking up a hill... Looking forward to get a chance to actually try it myself.

Oculus Rift with WorldViz wireless tracking

VSS Demo night 2013 - participant walking thru Virtual Worlds with a WorldViz PPT tracked system of the Tetherless Oculus Rift integration
Sandys VR's insight:

It was a great show for my co-workers. With the Oculus Rift integrated in a wireless WorldViz virtual reality solution (http://www.worldviz.com/systems/walking-vr) including software and position tracking, jumping is obviously easier than with other HMDs :)

I love the reactions of people trying 'The Pit' demo, you never know what happens next. My favorite was the parachuter who went belly down and I had to catch him. Well actually, I couldn't catch that big guy, we just knocked over half of our booth :)

Sandys VR's insight:

Neat little device from zSpace. Very intuitive. What is it you ask? It's basically a 3D TV with a special interaction device, like a pen. The difference to device we know: there is no actual touch while using the zSpace. The pen doesn't ever touch the screen but you work in the 3D environment. Vizard from WorldViz now enables you to easily write your own applications for the zSpace device.

This is nothing new but a very 'traditional' use of VR. Cue reactivity and addiction treatment are a very common application. At least in the field of psychology. I wonder why the author of this article calls it a 'twist' to VR?!

Rats! Why virtual reality doesn't feel 'real' - The Conversation The Conversation Have you ever noticed that even detailed, sophisticated virtual reality experiences don't feel completely “real”?

A very good explanation for the phenomenon everybody who has experienced VR knows. I also think the awareness of the real world through sound, light and obstacles is a very distracting factor. That's still very hard to get completely rid of.

Pretty cool experiment. I wonder how the Goggles for rats look like. I've heard from experiments with rats and other small animals before. I've also heard from VR Goggles for monkeys, but rats? Tiny!

I've seen experiments with rats in a treadmill with a projector, projecting a VR environment. But the perception of rats is completely different to the the human's. Rats don't even see 3D. If anyone has pictures of a rats HMD, I'm very curios.
