University of Maine graduates are landing jobs at companies like Google, EA, and Rockstar games, thanks, in part, to experience with an emerging technology. Students there are developing a special skill-set, in a learning environment they’re creating, with a computer. UMaine’s Virtual Environments and Multimodal Interaction Lab was open to the public Wednesday. It’s a …

There is so much to explore and learn from it though! I hope with developments like the Oculus Rift Crystal Cove and others it'll change soon.

I Wore the New Oculus Rift and I Never Want to Look at Real Life Again

I Wore the New Oculus Rift and I Never Want to Look at Real Life Again | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it
So the Oculus Rift is fantastic. If you've used it in its original incarnation, you know that it's incredible. It's virtual reality done better than you've ever seen it before. It's revolutionary. And it's nothing compared to what's coming next.
Sandys VR's insight:

I'm really, really, really curious now. My boss told me about his experience at CES this morning. He said "it is the best display I've ever experienced". That from someone who has worked in the field for over 20 years and probably has seen everything there is. Pretty good guys!

Gord Holden's curator insight, January 14, 12:01 PM

This kind of hyperbole is of course what critics love to hear. The enthusiasm is not about defaulting on living, but having the Oculus Rift being able to experience the world and ourselves in ways we could not otherwise do so. Explorers of geography, the sciences, psychology, etc., have always had their detractors, and always will, but our drive to discover, to learn, to experience new things, will always trump the nay sayers in the end. At least, let's hope so.

Sandys VR's insight:

This is another article that talks about the uses of VR. Sadly, the author still assumes, that VR isn't there yet. Believe me, all he is talking about has been done for years. BUT and that is where is is more than right: Now it starts to actually become affordable for everyone. Although, does everyone need to research human behavior? Probably not, but once the studies are at a point, that problems can be solved, diseases can be cured and life for everyone can be improved, the systems need to be affordable for the masses. I'm looking forward to that point in time, sooner than we expect I think.

"The problem we have, particularly with the current crisis in mental health in the military, is that we don't have enough well trained providers to handle the problem," says Skip Rizzo, the associate director for medical virtual reality at the ICT.

"This is not a replacement for a live provider, but it might be a stop-gap that helps to direct a person towards the kind of care they might need."

Projects Blog: Oculus Rift Position Tracking with Magnetic Field ... | Immersive Virtual Reality | Scoop.it
Over the last few days I have been experimenting with ways to add positional tracking to the Oculus Rift. After watching some of the CES videos it seem that an optical tracking system is working pretty well for Oculus, but I ...
Sandys VR's insight:

This is so cool! I admire his idea and the way he just "built" it from scratch. When the first rumors about Oculus integrating a position tracking system occurred last year the first thing that came into my mind was magnetic tracking. This seems to be the most logical and probably cheapest solution for Oculus. Of course there are downsides like i.e. interference (which is a problem for any tracking), but I believe it is cheaper and easier to achieve than optical tracking. For a small area like a persons desk it should be totally suitable. I guess there were reasons for Oculus to go for optical instead of magnetical (or other) position tracking. If anyone knows more, I'd be love to hear it!!

Sandys VR's insight:

He is so right with his headline. And I'm all excited about new releases and products. I've tried the Epson goggles he talks about, I'm not too excited about those to be honest. You'll need a plane, preferably white surface to be able to see anything that's going on in there. It also doesn't shut out your environment, which can be very distracting depending where you are. It might be nice for watching a movie at home on your couch, but honestly, there are more comfortable solutions for that than wearing sunglasses ;)

If you even remotely worry about aesthetics while wearing a HMD, please start punching yourself in the face repeatedly.
Sandys VR's insight:

We have the T3W in the warehouse, I'm gonna check it out and let you know how it is. In the pictures the headband still looks horrible, but my co-worker says it sits much better on your head now and they really improved it.

The FoV discussion in the comments of this article is very interesting. I think in Sony's case the problem isn't so much the FoV but the aspect ratio of the device. The Sony, as mentioned in the article, is made for watching movies, so it has a 16:9 display. That is kind of awkward for VR since the display is wider than it is high, which makes it feel very narrow. Nontheless, let's check it out.

Sandys VR's insight:

That's exciting news!

I thought of a completely different approach when I first heard about their plan to integrate position tracking. But apparently, everything is possible in VR and there is always at least one more solution that works just as good. There is always pros and cons for different solutions too. Active optical tracking is what Oculus went for, it has the advantage of being super precise but the disadvantage is, that warm light sources (like sunlight, lightbulbs, halogen lights) potentially interfere with the system. Well, we all know that gamers like it dark, so why not :)

I love the way they made this video. It's fun to watch and tells you the whole story about the product. I worked with guys from XSens before and their product isn't bad at all. It works surprisingly well for full body mocap, just as they show in the video. I wouldn't use Unity as the engine/application tool though, since it's not really build for VR.
