The fatal stabbing of a black University of Maryland student by a member of the “Alt-Reich: Nation” Facebook group.

A steady rise in incidents like these is sending a chilling message across America’s college campuses.

Working to empower black students nationwide, NEA’s Community and Partner Engagement department held NEA’s first Black Student Leader Day, a crash course in civic advocacy that helps students “turn the crazy things that are happening on campus into a win."

How the American Women Codebreakers of WWII Helped Win the War | Maya Wei-Haas | Smithsonian Magazine | immersive media | Scoop.it

The first American to learn that World War II had officially ended was a woman.

The Army and Navy's code breakers had avidly followed messages leading up to that fateful day. Nazi Germany had already surrendered to the Allies, and tantalizing hints from the Japanese suggested that this bloody chapter of history might soon come to an end. But when U.S. Army intelligence intercepted the Japanese transmission to the neutral Swiss agreeing to an unconditional surrender, the task fell to Virginia D. Aderholt to decipher and translate it.

Head of one of the Army's language units, Aderholt was a master at the cipher the Japanese used to transmit the message—teams crowded around her as she worked. After the Swiss confirmed Japanese intent, the statement was hurried into the hands of President Harry S. Truman. And on the warm summer evening of August 14, 1945, he made a much-anticipated announcement: World War II was finally over.

Throngs of Americans took to the streets to celebrate, cheering, dancing, crying, tossing newspaper confetti into the air. Since that day, many of the men and women who helped hasten its arrival have been celebrated in books, movies and documentaries. But Aderholt is among a group that has largely gone unnoticed for their wartime achievements.

As a Woman in Tech, I Realized: These Are Not My People | Megan McArdle | Bloomsberg View

As a Woman in Tech, I Realized: These Are Not My People | Megan McArdle | Bloomsberg View | immersive media | Scoop.it

Have you heard about the Google memo? Have you heard nothing but "Google memo" all week? James Damore, an engineer at Google, wrote a memo suggesting that maybe there weren’t so many women at Google because women are less interested in sitting around and staring at code all day. The internet erupted. James Damore is no longer working at Google.

As a woman working in the brotastic atmosphere of IT, I ultimately came to a conclusion similar to his. So I sympathize with him. Let me explain.

Until the age of 26, I was employed as a technology consultant by a small firm that served the financial industry. I built servers and workstations, mostly for banks, and in a happy foreshadowing of my future writing for Bloomberg View, I installed some of the first PC-based Bloomberg terminals for a Japanese firm's office in New York.

Finance back then was heavily male, as it is now. And technology, the same. At the intersection of the two … well, I can count on one hand all the women I worked with directly during almost four years of consulting.

It was very male-centric. I heard about client outings, involving strippers, to which I was obviously not invited. And the sexual harassment (entirely from clients, not colleagues), could be spectacular.

Which has nothing to do with why I left. This will make me sound a bit dim, but at the time, it never occurred to me that being a female in this bro ecosystem might impinge my ultimate career prospects. Nor did I miss having women in the room. I liked working with the bros just fine. And the sexual harassment, while annoying, was just that: annoying. I cannot recall that it ever affected my work, nor that I lost any sleep over it.

No, the reason I left is that I came into work one Monday morning and joined the guys at our work table, and one of them said “What did you do this weekend?"

The Middle-Class, Clean-Cut Racism of Richard Spencer’s Acolytes | Michelle Goldberg | Slate.com

The Middle-Class, Clean-Cut Racism of Richard Spencer’s Acolytes | Michelle Goldberg | Slate.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

I first met Richard Spencer, one of the organizers of Saturday’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in Cleveland during last year’s Republican National Convention. He was one of several alt-right figures who’d descended on the city to network and celebrate Donald Trump’s ascension. “Trump seems to be emotionally connected to us,” he told me. “Not really intellectually connected to us, but emotionally connected to millions of white people who think like I do.”

The next time I saw Spencer was when he crashed February’s Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual Republican showcase in Washington. I’ve been attending CPAC on and off for more than a decade, and have often listened to attendees angrily denouncing those who’d paint conservatism as racist. But after Trump’s election, swarms of collegiate right-wingers at the conference received Spencer like an underground hero. Some posed for selfies. One young man shouted, “Praise Kek!”—an alt-right in-joke about an Egyptian frog-headed god of darkness. J.P. Sheehan, a 26-year-old in a black MAGA hat, giddily pulled a “Radix” T-shirt—the name of Spencer’s online journal—from his bag. “I know a lot of people are afraid of him, but Richard Spencer is like, the coolest guy,” he told me.

Sheehan spoke with shining eyes about how embracing whiteness salved his spirit, made him feel like he wasn’t just an isolated consumer adrift in a shopping mall as big as the world. What shocked me most about this conversation was that Sheehan, the president of his school’s college Republican chapter, didn’t hesitate to let me quote him by name. He wasn’t just a white nationalist—he was a wholly unashamed one.

KY: LOOK BACK AT LEXINGTON’S BLACK HISTORY | Key Conversations Radio.com

KY: LOOK BACK AT LEXINGTON’S BLACK HISTORY | Key Conversations Radio.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

The post-Civil War years saw many changes for African Americans. The new-found freedom graphically illustrated the serious challenges facing the masses of African Americans. Though the physical shackles of slavery had been removed, the reality of life for most was not dramatically improved. Most newly freed slaves were still without food, money, clothing or shelter when the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified finally giving African Americans in Kentucky their freedom December 18, 1865.

According to Kentucky’s Black Heritage, Kentucky had over 200,000 freed slaves. Most could neither read nor write. Without the support of the plantation system, large numbers of African Americans were left without the basic necessities for survival.

Changes occurred in Kentucky’s African American population following the Civil War. One major change was the rapid increase of African Americans in the urban communities, particularly from the rural areas. In 1890, 28 percent of Kentucky’s African Americans lived in urban areas. By 1900, this had increased to 35 percent and in 1910, 41 percent of Kentucky’s African Americans lived in urban areas.

Simultaneous with urbanization came Kentucky’s loss of African Americans. The Black population of Kentucky steadily dropped from 18 percent in 1860 to 9.5 percent by 1920. Blacks in Lexington and the Bluegrass Region were affected by both the urbanization and the migration. Even though large numbers of African Americans fled the state, many who remained relocated to Lexington.

The Myth of Meritocratic Admissions at Harvard | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson | immersive media | Scoop.it

The Trump administration’s Justice Department will investigate whether Harvard discriminates against Asian American applicants, focusing on a complaint filed by 64 Asian American groups who charge that the University unlawfully considers race in admissions. Harvard also faces a similar lawsuit led by anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum, who helped Abigail Fisher unsuccessfully challenge the University of Texas’s race-conscious admissions policy before the Supreme Court.

Some critics have pointed out that Blum strategically recruited Asian American plaintiffs after losing the Fisher case so that he could re-litigate his complaint that affirmative action policies unfairly discriminate against white applicants who have the same or similar qualifications as non-white applicants. This time the case centers on Asian American applicants, but in one crucial way the song remains the same: Critical to the argument is the implication that Harvard rewards, or should reward, the most talented applicants.

But if you think Harvard is a meritocracy, I have news for you: It is not, and has never been.

The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement | Alice Speri | The Intercept.com

The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration of Law Enforcement | Alice Speri | The Intercept.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

White supremacists and other domestic extremists maintain an active presence in U.S. police departments and other law enforcement agencies. A striking reference to that conclusion, notable for its confidence and the policy prescriptions that accompany it, appears in a classified FBI Counterterrorism Policy Guide from April 2015, obtained by The Intercept. The guide, which details the process by which the FBI enters individuals on a terrorism watchlist, the Known or Suspected Terrorist File, notes that “domestic terrorism investigations focused on militia extremists, white supremacist extremists, and sovereign citizen extremists often have identified active links to law enforcement officers,” and explains in some detail how bureau policies have been crafted to take this infiltration into account.

Although these right-wing extremists have posed a growing threat for years, federal investigators have been reluctant to publicly address that threat or to point out the movement’s longstanding strategy of infiltrating the law enforcement community.

No centralized recruitment process or set of national standards exists for the 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States, many of which have deep historical connections to racist ideologies. As a result, state and local police as well as sheriff’s departments present ample opportunities for white supremacists and other right-wing extremists looking to expand their power base.
