"Storyteller, which -- as the name suggests -- wants to display your photos and videos in the form of stories. It also ties in with Nokia Here maps to show where pictures are taken, and recording with the Lumia 1520's four microphones to capture directional stereo audio as well. That's meant to give a "richer experience" when you're capturing photos, and later when sharing them with family and friends."

Relationship Building Through Culturally Responsive Classroom Management | Todd Finley Blog | Edutopia.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

School behavior problems often originate outside of the classroom. For example, asthma is the number one cause of absenteeism. When asthmatics are unable to sleep at night, they miss class or arrive at school so sleep drunk and irritable that disruptive behavior ensues, getting them tossed out of class. Consequently, they fall more behind in classwork, which increases academic struggle. More outbursts and further truancy results.

Poverty and race nitro-accelerate the cycle. Compared to only 1% of white children, 17% of black children suffer from asthma because low-income African-Americans are more likely to live in substandard, allergen-dense housing. Also, they have less access to preventative medicine. And that’s just one cause of classroom misbehavior.

Don’t blame asthmatic students, their parents, or their teachers. Blame a brutal ecosystem that is riddled with the following inequities:

“Talk the Walk”: A Game Changer The Best Storied Leaders Do

“Talk the Walk”: A Game Changer The Best Storied Leaders Do | immersive media | Scoop.it
Why words matter.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, August 21, 3:01 PM

I like this article because it goes beyond the simple leadership phrase "Walk the talk," which means "live your values, don't just talk about them".

What the author Bill Taylor is focusing on here is the connection between thinking, language, communication, and action. His position is that when leaders start thinking differently, their language changes, then their communication changes, and then if all goes well, their words and actions line up.

In other words, if leaders can break out of the "isms" of their company, they will start thinking differently about the organization and talk about it differently, too. That can be a game-changer for everyone. Want more innovation? Then start thinking about it differently. That starts the cascade to language, communication, and action.

Taylor has good examples to share, and then asks: "So ask yourself, as you try to lead an organization, or a business unit, or a department: Have you developed a vocabulary of competition that helps everyone understand what makes your company or team special and what it takes for them to be at their best? Can you explain, in a language all your own, what separates you from the pack and why you expect to win?"

All of this languaging and communication happens best through storytelling--which then shapes and inspires action of done well.

While this article is all about using shaping and shifting language internally, the next piece of work is making sure it also connects with customers so you don't end up becoming extinct.

20 Things Educators Need To Know About Digital Literacy Skills | Innovation Excellence

20 Things Educators Need To Know About Digital Literacy Skills | Innovation Excellence | immersive media | Scoop.it

Widely understood to be essential to success in the workplace and modern life, digital literacy is beginning to emerge as a necessary component of curricula across the globe. As current undergraduates have never known a life without the internet, it’s only natural that universities should nurture their familiarity with technology, encouraging its use in teaching and learning. Instructors should also be prepared to offer guidance on what students aren’t as familiar with–turning their technical skills into skills for lifelong learning and employability.

But where does one begin? Teaching digital literacy is about more than just integrating technology into lesson plans; it’s about using technology to understand and enhance modern communication, to locate oneself in digital space, to manage knowledge and experience in the Age of Information.

"Digital literacy isn’t about knowing computers inside and out; it’s about using technology to change the way you think. If critical thinking skills haven’t yet become a part of your students’ digital citizenship, it’s time to rethink your teaching strategy."

These are vague descriptions, as are most of the descriptions you’ll find of digital literacy in blog posts and journal articles online. What teachers need, more than a fancy synopsis of how digital publication affects the meaning of a text, is a practical and applicable guide to helping students think productively about the digital world.

Below are the top do’s and don’ts we’ve come across–in research and in our own experience–when it comes to making students digitally literate.

Literacy specialists at Central Michigan University and the Fordham Graduate School of Education published a report in 2013 entitled “No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait” which identified the following practices as harmful to the growth of the movement.

Abstract

The most productive learning experience for students whether online or in face-to-face classes can often be the interaction among students and with an instructor. Online teaching and Social Network Analysis (SNA) offer the opportunity to examine intellectual social networking and strategies that promotes student interaction which can enhance learning.

This study focuses on two online courses in which we used Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques to evaluate and compare student and instructor interactions of two online courses (Lesley University, Cambridge, MA and Instituto Piaget, Lisbon, Portugal). One course was taught by an experienced online instructor and the other by an instructor new to the online teaching format.

We describe and present some of the main features of SNA such as degree of participation, density of interaction, linkage, formation of subsets, distribution of centrality among the participants as well as network patterns.

Although the countries and content of the courses were different, SNA allowed us to make comparisons using objective statistical methods. We found that the instructional approach has a clear effect on interactions. In addition, we noted that under some instructional circumstances a multi-star pattern of interaction was created which is an undocumented SNA pattern. We also observed that SNA can be useful in studying online course interactions leading to enhanced learning.
