Share stories...that's what people want to hear.

Jim Signorelli,Story-Lab's curator insight, October 25, 2013 7:54 AM

Annette Simmons,  one of the "Storyati," has a new weekly podcast.

In this, her second podcast, and while interviewing my delightful story friend Karen Dietz,  they talk about their connection to story, what it means to them and how they help others make the most of its power. Karen,  who claims she's more of a story scholar than a storyteller, does a pretty good job of telling her own story about some funny things that happened on the way to her doctorate.    Highly recommend a listen and subscribing to these podcasts.

Don Cloud's curator insight, October 25, 2013 9:25 PM

The best stories are those worth sharing.  Even better stories are those that a leader helps his/her people to create together.

I am a strong proponent of encouraging learners of all ages to engage in reflective practice. Learners do not just receive information only at the time it is given; they absorb information in many different ways, often after the fact, through reflection. The most powerful learning often happens when students self-monitor, or reflect. Students may…

Teaching Toward Consciousness | Joshua Block | Edutopia.org

Teaching Toward Consciousness | Joshua Block | Edutopia.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Recently, national media published several articles that examine educational inequality in our country. The New York Times analyzed the correlation between money, race, and success in different school districts, while National Public Radio produced a series titled School Money: The Cost of Opportunity.

This information about schools and the disparate daily realities of students are a reminder that educators must develop pedagogy that speaks to and examines a range of understandings and experiences. To ignore the lives of young people and the current state of affairs is to fail students and miss the potential for education to inform, challenge, and inspire change. There is work to be done in classrooms at all settings -- exclusive institutions, high-poverty areas, mixed-population schools, and environments not easily summarized -- but the work differs depending on the community and the individuals.

In the future, learning is going to be very different from today in many ways that you can hardly imagine. As technology becomes more advance, we use digital media to help us learn and the need of a live teacher reduces, thus in the future, we could even have home lessons where we can study in our homes and not go to school.

Trump’s first full education budget: Deep cuts to public school programs in pursuit of school choice | Emma Brown, Valerie Strauss and Danielle Douglas-Gabriel | WashPost.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Funding for college work-study programs would be cut in half, public-service loan forgiveness would end and hundreds of millions of dollars that public schools could use for mental health, advanced coursework and other services would vanish under a Trump administration plan to cut $10.6 billion from federal education initiatives, according to budget documents obtained by The Washington Post.

The administration would channel part of the savings into its top priority: school choice. It seeks to spend about $400 million to expand charter schools and vouchers for private and religious schools, and another $1 billion to push public schools to adopt choice-friendly policies.

President Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have repeatedly said they want to shrink the federal role in education and give parents more opportunity to choose their children’s schools.

Want To See How School Choice Leads to Segregation? Visit Betsy DeVos’ Hometown | Jennifer Berkshire | AlterNet.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

To see for yourself how school choice leads to segregation, I recommend a visit to Betsy DeVos’ hometown of Holland, MI.

Here, two decades of the policies that the Trump/DeVos education budget now wants to take national, have resulted in white flight and school closures, leaving Holland’s poor and minority students segregated in the few schools that remain open. I traveled to Holland last week for the annual Tulip Time festival, a celebration of the city’s Dutch heritage. But along with Dutch shoes and swagger, the legacy of Michigan’s now two decade-long experiment with school choice was on vivid display as well, and it wasn’t pretty.

When students participate in their learning and take responsibility for it, they engage in their learning. In my classroom, students often were asked to teach each other through their activities. More over, students wanted to help each other and teach. However, we should understand this is not an abdication of teacher responsibility. I played a vital role in their learning.

Betsy DeVos to lay out the plan to privatize education and destroy public schools in Monday speech | Laura Clawson | DailyKos.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Betsy DeVos will give a speech Monday evening in which she’s expected to offer details on how she and Donald Trump plan to destroy American public education. DeVos will be speaking at the American Federation for Children’s national policy summit.

The American Federation for Children is a school privatization advocacy group that DeVos herself headed right up until Trump nominated her as education secretary, and to which she and her husband contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars, so she’s really completing the circle of corruption here.

What Community Colleges Do That Universities Don’t | Mitch Daniels | Time.com

What Community Colleges Do That Universities Don’t | Mitch Daniels | Time.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

In tiny Watertown, South Dakota — in the middle of America — one community college is doing the unthinkable. Six months after graduation, 99% of students from Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI) are employed or continuing their education. After five years, graduates earn wages higher than average for all other workers in the region. Seventy-four percent of students at Lake Area graduate or transfer to a four-year college within three years — compared to fewer than 40% for community college students nationally.

This small community college’s success should capture our attention. It should become a model for what higher education at its best can be all across America, where, since the end of the recession, 95% of jobs have gone to workers with at least some college education. Those with a high-school diploma or less are increasingly left behind.
