Do You have a friend in need?  This site allows mutliple friends systematically help create a schedule for helping with meals, etc.

A common trend is an influx of help, support, cards, phone calls, etc. immediately after someone suffers a major setback such as sickness or death of a loved one.  Then that floodgate of love often dissapears quickly. This website can help visualize that problem.

Another problem is that the floodgate of food ends up going to waste because it is not coordinated. This site was created to solve that core problem.

This book explores the many pedagogical uses of Story in psychology instruction. Rich with teaching tips, examples, resources, and outcome data, the collected chapters serve as both a reference for developing creative uses of Story in the (real or virtual) classroom and as an example of evidence-based scholarship in the field.  The volume is organized into sections focusing on the theoretical underpinnings of Story, the autobiographical use of Story, application of Story in different course contexts, and interdisciplinary perspectives on the pedagogical use of Story.

Disrupting Power

Disrupting Power | immersive media | Scoop.it
The Social Age has changed everything: broadly speaking, it has eroded formal authority in favour of socially moderated, divergent and contextual Social Authority. This has eroded the purpose of organisations themselves, as distributed social mechanisms of production have empowered individuals and small groups, whilst making large organisations less able to react to the ever-changing nature of the world today.

Only the Boys Want to Code! | Nettrice Gaskins | Musing of a Renegade Futurist | immersive media | Scoop.it

"It has been a commonly held belief that the gender gap in tech is primarily a pipeline issue; that there are simply not enough girls studying math and science. Recently updated information indicates an equal number of high school girls and boys participating in STEM electives, and at Stanford and Berkeley, 50% of the introductory computer science students are women. (However,) the U.S. Census Bureau reported last year that twice as many men as women with the same qualifications were working in STEM fields." – Bonnie Marcus

Last Saturday, I was on a panel with black women STEM professionals to talk about how we got to where we are in our fields. The host was Black Girls Code Boston. During the Q & A, a young man asked, “What programming languages do you like to use?” I noted how his eyes lit up in expectation. Scratch programming was mentioned and some heads were nodding in the audience but the kid wanted more. I talked about Processing and Arduino and how one was in Javascript and the other was C++. I also talked about Python, which allows programmers to express concepts in fewer lines of code than C++ or Java. None of the girls in attendance asked about coding but they were listening.

When a parent asked the BGCB panel to talk about what we would say to our 13 year old selves I talked about auditioning for a Teen Board to do something I didn’t think I could do (i.e., fashion merchandising, runway modeling, makeup). I didn’t think I was the type to do that. I tried out and forgot that I had done it until the day when I received the letter informing me that I was chosen. I remember the panic I felt but I participated, anyway. I feel the same way about computer programming. I thought artists didn’t program/code.

Separating Fiction From Facts in Data Storytelling

Separating Fiction From Facts in Data Storytelling | immersive media | Scoop.it
The field of data storytelling is still relatively new and uncharted, but it has become a hot topic in both analytics and business circles. As various people step forward to provide opinions on how to tell data stories, misinformation is creeping in which, if left unaddressed, could lead aspiring data storytellers astray. This article will separate the fiction from the facts to help more people understand what is required to tell powerful data stories.

Want to get better at data storytelling? Want to know more about what it is and how to do it? Then read this post!

Data storytelling is all the rage now. Given how many industries, companies, and businesses are drowning in big data, figuring out how to narrate the insights to be found is a big deal.

Yet lots of mistakes about how to tell a data story are being made. This is a terrific post that helps bring clarity to the entire field. It's a great read and you will come away enlightened. And hopefully better able to craft that data narrative. Enjoy.

After 36,000 years, a massive volcano near Rome rumbles to life | Chriatina Beck | CSMonitor.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Italy, home to one of the most famous volcanic disasters in history, is showing signs that another massive eruption is brewing, according to a new study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Almost 2,000 years after the burial of Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D., an ancient volcano near Rome is rumbling to life, say scientists. About 19 miles away from the heart of Rome, an ancient volcanic district called the Colli Albani is stirring.

The Colli Albani, a 9-mile-long semicircle of hills on the outskirts of Rome, last erupted 36,000 years ago, so geologists had classified it as extinct – until about 20 years ago.

In the early 1990s, the area around the Colli Albani Volcanic District began showing geological indicators of a future explosion: ground levels shifted, steam vents opened, and earthquakes shook the hills around the site.

Educator, author, and activist Jesse Hagopian, a guest contributor to Education Votes, was one of the featured speakers at the Save Our Schools (SOS) rally, also known as the People’s March for Public Education and Social Justice.

It took place Friday, July 8th, in Washington, D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial. Hagopian, a staunch advocate for students and educators, led a boycott at his Seattle high school against high-stakes testing that sparked a national movement.

At the S.O.S. rally, in a powerful speech, he highlighted the critical link between the Black Lives Matter movement and the education of African-American students.
