“The web gives us, as directors, a lot of possibilities, freedom and creativity to tell stories in a new way,” the 46-year-old Dufresne (pictured, left) tells realscreen, adding that a broadcast version of Fort McMoney is in production.

“You don’t tell the same things in a TV version that you do in a web doc or game doc,” he says. “On the web, what is magical to me is that people feel they are part of the movie, part of the story – that they’re inside...."

Amazon makes a direct offer to Hachette authors: Here's the full letter | GigaOM Tech News

Amazon makes a direct offer to Hachette authors: Here's the full letter | GigaOM Tech News | immersive media | Scoop.it

As the negotiations with Hachette drag on, Amazon says it is “thinking of proposing” a path that would alleviate pressure on Hachette authors.

David Naggar, VP of Kindle content and independent publishing, sent a letter to a few Hachette authors, literary agents and Authors Guild president Roxana Robinson over the weekend suggesting that “for as long as this dispute lasts, Hachette authors would get 100% of the sales price of every Hachette ebook we sell. Both Amazon and Hachette would forego all revenue and profit from the sale of every ebook until an agreement is reached.” The idea, seemingly, is that that loss of ebook revenue would “motivate both Hachette and Amazon to work faster to resolve the situation.”

Hachette would need to agree to the proposal, of course, and the letter made it clear that as of its writing Amazon hadn’t actually suggested the idea to Hachette yet: Rather, it’s what “we’re thinking of proposing to them,” and it wants to “get feedback” from authors and agents first. It is likely that the company suspected — or hoped — the letter would become public as a means of putting pressure on Hachette: Amazon comes across as the good guy, looking out “for midlist and debut authors,” while Hachette’s “unresponsiveness and unwillingness to talk until we took action put us in this position.”

Hachette, for its part, showed no signs of capitulating Tuesday. “We invite Amazon to withdraw the sanctions they have unilaterally imposed, and we will continue to negotiate in good faith and with the hope of a swift conclusion,” the company told me in a statement (see the full statement at the bottom of the post, after the letter). In response to that statement, Amazon said, “We call baloney. Hachette is part of a $10 billion global conglomerate. It wouldn’t be ‘suicide.’ They can afford it.” (See Amazon’s full statement also at the bottom of the post, after the letter.)

Websites + Storytelling: The Best Way To Drive Traffic

Websites + Storytelling: The Best Way To Drive Traffic | immersive media | Scoop.it

"Storytelling is one of the oldest habits of modern civilization. Ever since we learned to communicate, understand each other, we have been telling stories. At a time when your website is the storefront of your business and a gateway to increased conversions, storytelling is surely one of the key components that can play a crucial role in turning the tides in your favor. After all, web design is also about communicating concepts and ideas, isn’t it?"

Karen Dietz's curator insight, July 1, 9:05 AM

I like this quick article because it reminds us of 3 key points to remember when sharing our business stories on our website:

  1. Words matter. For me I find it much easier to record myself telling a story orally and then converting that to text. From there I can then craft a written story without losing my unique voice and authenticity.
  2. Parallax web design is a very cool tool for telling your brand story.
  3. A mascot (think MailChimp) can be a big boost for your business -- especially in B2C. Although MailChimp is a B2B company, I think figuring out if a mascot will work for you is all about really knowing your audience.

Think about these 3 points and have an awesome day.

5 Apps for Making Movies on Mobile Devices | Monica Burns Blog | Edutopia.org

5 Apps for Making Movies on Mobile Devices | Monica Burns Blog | Edutopia.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Every year at Hollywood award shows, we see fantastic movies celebrated for their rich storytelling and dynamic performances. Your students can become moviemakers, too, thanks to some powerful apps for mobile devices. With these tools, your children can take videos and edit their work to make professional quality movies using iOS devices (iPads and iPhones) and Android tablets.

One good thing about this easy-to-use technology is that students can still use important English language arts skills like writing a narrative, planning a sequential story, and including key details when getting ready to make a movie. These apps can enhance the work that you are doing with children in the classroom and give them room to be creative storytellers.

Albert Einstein's Reply to a Female Fan's Confession Should Be in Every Science Textbook | Identies.MIC.com

Albert Einstein's Reply to a Female Fan's Confession Should Be in Every Science Textbook | Identies.MIC.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

"I hope you will not think any the less of me for being a girl!"

This plea was sent to Albert Einstein by a young South African in the 1940s, and was recently unearthed as part of Alice Caprice's Dear Professor Einstein: Albert Einstein's Letters to and from Children. Although brief, Tyfanny's words capture the self-consciousness and self-doubt that have for so long plagued women who aspire to careers in science and technology.

In the letter, dated Sept. 19, 1946, a seemingly agonized Tyfanny admits to Einstein that she has left out a potentially damaging detail about herself. "I forgot to tell you, in my last letter, that I was a girl. I mean I am a girl," the young scientist writes. "I have always regretted this a great deal, but by now I have become more or less resigned to the fact."

The physicist's pithy response is a timeless lesson that bears repeating, all these decades later. "I do not mind that you are a girl, but the main thing is that you yourself do not mind," the Nobel Prize winner replied. "There is no reason for it."

There really is no reason why girls should doubt their abilities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). But for years, popular culture has fostered an environment that, purposefully or not, sends women and girls the message that boys should handle the power tools, lest the girls' dresses get a little dusty.
