Ken's Key Takeaway:

Being able to use technology should not be the end goal.  We should be able to use technology to work toward bigger academic and community goals.

A visual story requires more than one image

A visual story requires more than one image | immersive media | Scoop.it
In his chapter about photo stories, Ken Kobré wrote: “How does a picture story differ from a collection of pictures on a topic? A picture story has a theme. Not only are the individual pictures in the story about one subject, but they also help to support one central point” (Photojournalism: The Professionals’ Approach, 6th ed., page 232).

I've been waiting a long time to write this essay. I thought of it four or five years ago when I was writing a series of posts about natural storytelling. I never wrote the essay because other projects got in the way, but it has been at the back of my mind all this time. I'm excited to finally bring these thoughts to you.

Recap: Design & Making Class Colloquium | Nettrice Gaskins | Musings of a Renegade Futurist | immersive media | Scoop.it

I came. I saw. I spoke about equity in making and STEAM. I also attended a day of presentations about Coding and Art, Learning Redesigned, and Ciphers and Codes in the Math Classroom, as well as a full day workshop on Wearable Technology. In between workshop sessions I gave a keynote talk. The keynote for the first day was Karen Wilkinson, director of The Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium. She is also the co-author of The Art of Tinkering, which I use as a reference book in the STEAM Lab.

After her talk we were asked to engage Compass Points, which is a visible thinking tool for examining propositions: E = excited, W = worrisome, N = need to know, S = suggestions for moving forward. The topic was making and some of the issues participants brought up was finding support for making during the school day, or getting training for teachers.

For some people, “visual storytelling” means photographs. For others, it means film or video. An epic movie such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy may spring to mind — and few would disagree with that as a fine example of visual storytelling.

This year's Perseid meteor shower is really bringing the rain | Nick Lavars | NewAtlas.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Every August our planet passes through the trail of debris left behind by the ancient comet Swift-Tuttle, and every year Earthlings are treated to a spectacular meteorite shower. But this year the heavens are expected to crank up the dial on the atmospheric fireworks, with our planet traveling closer to the heart of the comet trail to set up one of the most dazzling meteor showers you'll likely see all year.

Each year the Perseid meteor shower rolls into town to hit its peak between August 11 and 13. Like other meteor showers, the spectacle is created when our atmosphere comes into contact with a stream of debris, such as that trailing comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun every 133 years.

How 3 publishers are using Instagram stories for visually compelling storytelling | immersive media | Scoop.it
Now with Instagram offering both long- and short-term content, newsrooms are rolling out different strategies for the two similar-but-distinct platforms. I talked with The New York Times, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated — each known for striking photography and large Instagram followings — to understand how they are trying to make use of Instagram Stories for a new kind of visual narrative. Here, lightly edited, is what they had they say.
