Framed: putting context in the player's hands [A new approach to interactive storytelling] | immersive media | Scoop.it

Tracey Lien:  "In most video games, players are entrusted with performing actions: run, jump, shoot, swing, slash, crouch and curb-stomp. The developer sets the scene, establishes the context and the player is released into the world with an arsenal of actions. In Loveshack Entertainment's Framed, things work the other way around."

A detailed look at the creative process behind a new approach to interactive storytelling in video games.

Hanson Zandi's curator insight, May 8, 2013 7:40 AM

With Graphic novels being vogue and interactive media sought after- this is a great game by Loveshack Entertainment. It puts the audience in control to craft the story.

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's curator insight, May 11, 2013 9:17 AM

Reminds me of Led Zeppelin's _In Through the Out Door_ interior album jackets.  I realized a few years ago that story arc is particular to the character's point of view, and should be talked about in that way, so this really adds a dimension to the analysis that could help students imagine stories from multiple perspectives.

Computing Across the African Diaspora | Nettrice Gaskins | Musings of a Renegade Futurist

Computing Across the African Diaspora | Nettrice Gaskins | Musings of a Renegade Futurist | immersive media | Scoop.it

I’ve dedicated several posts to exploring computing ideas and concepts underlying various mental, physical and organizational projects from the perspectives of the cosmology of African cultures and the world (i.e., in Afrofuturism and STEAM). This includes the computation underlying African geometry patterns (African Fractals), the Talking Drum (Electrofunk Mixtape), and augmented space (Afrofuturism 3.0).

This has been a learning process: instead of trying to fit African cultural heritage into a Western box I’m identifying the ways African and Indigenous cultures create their own technologies.

How might these methods inform the work of diasporic artists/designers? How can they be used to teach young people about the value of their culture, others’ cultures and STEAM?

The rhizome: A problematic metaphor for teaching and learning in a MOOC

The rhizome: A problematic metaphor for teaching and learning in a MOOC

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, January 27, 3:01 AM

ABSTRACT

Deleuze and Guattari’s principles of the rhizome were used to inform the design of a massive open online course (MOOC), Rhizomatic Learning: The Community is the Curriculum, which came to be known as Rhizo14. In a previous paper about learner experiences in this course our reported findings from a qualitative survey (which enabled anonymous responses) raised concerns about the ethics of using experimental pedagogies in designing MOOCs. In this paper, we continue this research and report learners’ understandings of the rhizome as applied in Rhizo14, from what participants have told us in email interviews and from our own reflections on participation in the course. Our findings reveal that many participants could relate to and welcomed the anti-authoritarian, anti-hierarchical characteristics of the rhizome, but that knowledge and understanding of Deleuze and Guattari’s conceptual principles of the rhizome was more difficult. Lack of engagement with theory and lack of appreciation of the incompleteness and complexities of the rhizome metaphor can result in negative consequences, such as imbalances in power relations and increased vulnerability for some learners.

Thornton Dial, Outsider Artist Whose Work Told of Black Life, Dies at 87 | William Grimes | NYTimes.com

Thornton Dial, a self-taught artist whose paintings and assemblages fashioned from scavenged materials told the story of black struggle in the South and found their way to the permanent collections of major museums, died on Monday at his home in McCalla, Ala. He was 87.

His death was confirmed by family members.

Mr. Dial, the illiterate son of an unwed teenage mother, spent much of his childhood in rural poverty in western Alabama and, after moving to Bessemer, an industrial suburb of Birmingham, labored at a wide variety of occupations, all the while making works from castoff materials that he came to think of as art only when he was in his 50s.

In 1987, Lonnie Holley, a self-taught artist living in Birmingham, showed William Arnett, an Atlanta collector interested in Southern folk art, one of Mr. Dial’s decorated fish lures. The two men went to see Mr. Dial, who, once he realized what Mr. Arnett was looking for, pulled a painted, welded-steel sculpture topped by a stylized steel turkey out of a turkey coop.

“I knew I was witnessing something great coming out of that turkey coop,” Mr. Arnett said in a statement issued by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, which he established to preserve and document African-American vernacular art. “I didn’t know at the time that it wasn’t simply the sculpture that was special. The man who had created it was a great man, and he would go on to become recognized as one of America’s greatest artists. I can’t think of any important artist who has started with less or accomplished more.”

Mr. Arnett championed Mr. Dial relentlessly, with remarkable success.

I ran across this post the other day giving the backstory and info about a new storytelling app for iOS devices. I haven't downloaded it yet onto my iPad (I have an Android phone) to check it out. I thought you should know about it anyway.

Hmmmmm -- this may be a good way to quickly capture customer "stories", tell your business stories, or record staff/vendor stories. That takes skills in evoking stories, and then story crafting, which many of you are already good at.

So go try this out and let us know if it's worthwhile!

It's not often that you get to work with people whose ideas and hope for humanity is both positive and visionary. In this article, I was proud to offer my writing & editing talents to help my friend Maya Zuckerman 'birth' one of the most interesting and daring takes on the collective story journey I've read in a long time. Guided and shepherded by "cultural designer" Joe Brewer and "transmedia giant" Jeff Gomez, Zuckerman manages to connect complicated concepts to real world events in a manner that makes new narrative concepts relevant. I am grateful for Maya's complete trust in the collaborative effort and the process through which this article found its voice. Maya... you're a rising 'star'.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, January 25, 3:45 PM

Artist, illustrator, and author Christoph Niemann shares with us in this 20 minute video the 3 fears that any storyteller and creative faces on any given day.

What I love is that while Niemann is particularly talking to artists, if you substitute "storyteller", you can relate to everything he says.

Every business storyteller will bump up against one, two, or mostly likely all 3 of these fears when working with stories. It's time we begin to start talking about this so storytelling becomes more grounded in personal process. Why? Because understanding the personal process of working with stories leads to greatness, as Niemann points out.

Watch this video, wrestle with these fears, keep going, do amazing stuff, and story on!

You can do this in your non profit or business too. Whether it's through character development on social media or creating an interactive game for your audience, you can make your story come to life in lots of different ways.
