First satellite for the "space nation" of Asgardia due for launch in August | Michael Irving | NewAtlas.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Last year, some 200,000 people decided they don't want to live on this planet anymore, and registered to be citizens of the first "space nation," Asgardia.

In the unlikely event that it ever gets off the ground, the extremely-ambitious project would see a system of satellites orbiting the Earth, carrying a country's worth of people.

Now the self-appointed Head of Nation has outlined plans to launch the first of these satellites.

Google Launches ‘Lynching In America’ Project Exploring Country's Violent Racial History | Zeba Blay | HuffPost.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

The history of lynching and racial terror in America is the focus of an ambitious new project launched Tuesday by Google, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative.

Google has helped create a new interactive site titled “Lynching in America,” which is based on an 80-page publication by the EJI. Its research has been adapted into a powerful visual narrative about the horror and brutality that generations of black Americans have faced.

The site consists of audio stories from the descendants of lynching victims, and a documentary short called “Uprooted,” which chronicles the impact of lynching on black families. The project also includes an interactive map that details locations of racial terror lynchings, complete with profiles of the victims and the stories behind their deaths.

'Parthenon' made of books built at site of Nazi book burning | Yannick Pasquet | TheLocal.de | immersive media | Scoop.it

A Greek-style temple made out of banned books hopes to stir debate about censorship at the site of Nazi book burning in central Germany.

It looks like the monumental temple standing imposingly at the Acropolis in Athens. But this replica in central Germany is not built with marble, but books that have been or remain banned.

"The Parthenon of Books" is the main showpiece at this year's Documenta - the cult contemporary art show held once every five years in the university town of Kassel.

The work by Argentine artist Marta Minujin is a plea against all forms of censorship.

Minujin, 74, a pop art icon in South America, has described it as "the most political" of her works.

In fact, the "Parthenon of Books" stands at the same site where, in 1933, Nazis set in flames books by Jewish or Marxist writers.

Timekeeping as feminist pedagogy

Whether you have known me as one of my students or a colleague, you may have noticed that I am obsessive about timekeeping in meetings, events, and the courses I teach. If you haven’t known me in either capacity, nice to digitally meet you. My name is Danica and I am obsessed with timekeeping. This is because, as I recently had the opportunity to explain to an audience, for me, timekeeping is a feminist issue.

Why Our Learners Need Media Literacy in a Transforming World | GDC Team | GlobalDigitalCitizen.org

Why Our Learners Need Media Literacy in a Transforming World | GDC Team | GlobalDigitalCitizen.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Media literacy has become a more important consideration in our children’s futures than ever. It behooves educators to be familiar with media’s role in our changing world. Media is here to stay as a main component of how society shares information across a vast population quickly. While some teachers fear it, others are realizing the potential to reach more students through things that our digital natives are familiar with.

When importance is given to finding and harnessing ways that students learn best, the modern teacher benefits as much as students. At the same time we must be addressing citizenship within the digital community. Otherwise students are left to fend for themselves online, and we do a disservice to them by leaving them uninformed.

4 Powerful Ways To Use The Art of Storytelling

4 Powerful Ways To Use The Art of Storytelling | immersive media | Scoop.it
I was in the middle of my presentation. Before me was a stadium full of people I barely knew. Then something happened.

It is what all speakers  dread.

My slides disappeared from the big screen behind me. Gone. And they never came back. It was a moment that all speakers hope will never happen.

But it did.

Stories touch hearts

People will forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel.

In that quote (often attributed to Carl Buechner) is the truth about the art of storytelling. Touching people’s hearts is at the centre of engagement.

When I  started my online publishing venture it was all about the facts. Information, data and stats. When I commenced my speaking career my Powerpoint’s was all about bullet points. More information and more stuff. When I began writing emails the facts were the main hero.

But if you want to move people, educate and transform you need more than that in your toolbox.

As marketers you need stories to be memorable. To persuade.

In a digital age and a noisy world we need the art of storytelling more than ever.
