Start With WHERE, Not WHY In Your Stories

Start With WHERE, Not WHY In Your Stories | immersive media | Scoop.it

My business storytelling colleague Paul Andrew Costello shares great wisdom with us as he challenges the popular notion of "start with WHY", so rampant today in business/business storytelling circles.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, May 21, 12:45 PM

Paul, I couldn't agree more. WHY has it's place, but WHERE is much more powerful. I like your approach much better.

Folks -- check out Paul's post and let's get unstuck from WHY

Click on the link above to read the entire recent thread from Worldwide Story Work group on Facebook. In the post, participant names are hyperlinked so you can check them out.

Here are the opening paragraphs:

START WITH WHERE, NOT WHY

Paul Andrew Costello The new book, all the rage is, "Start With WHY" (Simon Sinek), but Why? dare I ask?

I want to write a book in reply, titled, Don’t start with WHY, start with WHERE. Because Why assumes there is a reason, whereas more times than not, WHY is a SITUATION, not a reason. Why are police in controversy? Why are young men from minorities being targeted? Why is America still so scared of terrorism? Don't formulate some grand theory about racism or class, just go into those streets and meet those people and you understand that a thousand reasons wont do justice to the situation.

A why question implies that people have the luxury of an answer, as if the world must always conform to cause and effect logic, or that people always have the freedom to have reasons, rather than acting out of necessity. Most human complexities are compounded by answer-denying situations and once you give an answer, its immediately wrong because there is no one answer.

Go read the blog post for the entire conversation and what people in the biz story world really think about the notion "Start With Why".

This hand dandy free guide from HubSpot (I have no affiliation) is all about storytelling. Their premise (and mine) is that without well developed personas, it will be hard to market effectively and get high numbers of blog readers.

Personas are simply storied characters about who uses your products/services. Do these well, and you will be light years ahead of others.

What I like here is how complete the section is on creating personas. There are clear instructions and 2 pages of questions to help you flesh out your characters.

The rest of the guide focuses on how to optimize and promote your blog post.

Crafting great personas/storied characters will definitely make a difference in your business. And I love that this guide addresses a side of business storytelling that often gets overlooked.

Stanford Study Shows Dramatic Math Improvement From Playing Video Games Just 10 Minutes Per Day | Jordan Shapiro | Forbes.com

Stanford Study Shows Dramatic Math Improvement From Playing Video Games Just 10 Minutes Per Day | Jordan Shapiro | Forbes.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

Third graders played for just 10 minutes per day, 3 days a week, for four weeks. The comparison group’s class received the same materials and the same instruction, but didn’t play the game. The result of playing was a staggering 20.5% improvement after just two hours of self-guided play.

Of course, it probably won’t work with just any game. And the hard part is figuring out which games to use, especially considering today’s exploding market for learning games. Recently, I spent about an hour browsing the Google Play for Education Store. It was the first time I really looked at it carefully and I was not impressed. There was no way to really evaluate whether or not a game will help my kids learn anything. Likewise, it is extremely difficult to choose learning apps from Apple’s iOS Appstore. Hyper-curated in order to facilitate sales, both stores are full of big claims that play on both our naïve belief that computers will eventually be able to do everything and our incessant fears that our children need an academic head start.

Some interesting points made here. I agree with some of the points made for example setting an example for our students on the correct copyright procedure. Not sure though if the gain would be worth the pain of limiting factors such as slow internet and availability.

David Prince's curator insight, May 27, 12:33 AM

After downloading a couple of clips over time then reading the article I can see how important it is to be mindful of copyright on you tube. As a pre-service teacher it has become clearer that one must demonstrate clear guidelines on downloading information to show students that ethical behaviour is required within the ICT community.

'Open Educational Resources' Promoted in U.S. Senate Proposal | Michelle Davis & Sean Cavanagh | EdWeek.org

'Open Educational Resources' Promoted in U.S. Senate Proposal | Michelle Davis & Sean Cavanagh | EdWeek.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

Federal lawmakers want to encourage schools to consider using free, modifiable learning resources for students before investing in costly textbooks and curricula.

A move in the U.S. Senate to promote schools' use of open educational resources, if enacted by Congress and ultimately embraced by schools, could have a major impact on the development of curricula and on the companies that provide content to schools, some education experts say.

The latest Senate version of the main federal law on K-12 education includes new wording to encourage the use of open education resources—alternatives to proprietary products created by commercial companies—through grants that the Elementary and Secondary Education Act would make available to states.

"That little provision has potential for quite a large impact," said Douglas A. Levin, an Arlington, Va.-based consultant and analyst on educational technology issues. "If and when this passes, the question is whether this will be just a bureaucratic requirement or whether it will be enforced and prioritized."

The influence of such language on both schools and the education business community may ultimately depend on who is in the White House next, Mr. Levin added.

A handful of states are already pursuing and promoting the use of open educational resources, or OER, often with a focus on digital materials. But publishers and ed-tech companies are looking closely to determine how the language incorporated into the pending Senate bill to reauthorize the ESEA could affect their bottom lines.

The bipartisan amendment to the proposed Senate rewrite of the law is meant to encourage schools "to use and share open educational resources to disseminate best practices and provide an alternative to costly textbooks," Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said in a statement to Education Week.

Sen. Hatch—whose state has taken a lead role in encouraging the use of open resources—and Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., sponsored the amendment, which was approved by a voice vote April 16. The overall bill awaits a vote of the full chamber.
