More Than Just Male and Female: The Six Genders in Classical Judaism | Charlotte Fonrobert | SojournGSD.org | immersive media | Scoop.it

It's very easy to assume that Judaism is an exclusively gender-binary religion. Almost all of the common traditional laws are based on the assumed differences between males and females. We see it in assumed gender roles, in liturgy, in proscribed family responsibilities, and in both our secular and religious laws.

If, however, we look just a bit deeper into our sacred texts, we see that a simple male/female binary is not only cumbersome, it's wholly inaccurate. This description from Trans Torah/Rabbi Elliot Kukla starts the conversation that we will continue throughout the summer;

When Black Joy Has White Witnesses | Dominique Matti | Medium.com

When Black Joy Has White Witnesses | Dominique Matti | Medium.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

I went to my city’s Juneteenth parade this weekend. It was in Old City, a historically oriented part of Philly. It hosts the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, horse drawn carriages, tour guides in bonnets, and a shit ton of tourists on segways. I generally avoid Old City, but it was important that the parade was there. It was important because our nation does a lot of praising of certain parts of its history, while skimming past others.

Juneteenth is the historic day on which the final 250,000 enslaved Africans in Texas were informed of their freedom — two years later than their freedom became law. Celebrating Juneteenth in a place which heralds colonial America (and its founding fathers) with fondness felt like a necessary infiltration of a more accurate truth. It felt like refusing to have our history withheld from the narrative.

I walked up to the park where the parade began with my son in tow and my husband next to me. I saw all of the marchers in queue — a drill team, a second line, stilt walkers, dancers. I heard drums, saw small children dancing in Ankara prints.

I cried. I couldn’t help it. It was equally due to how weepy I get during pregnancy, and how much collective trauma and suffering I knew we’d all endured. Our ancestors endured it, our children will endure it, and still we manage to dance — to celebrate ourselves. My tears were tears of awe and tears of pride. It’s really easy to feel fucked as a Black person in America, but there is nothing in the world like Black joy.

Blue Origin to live broadcast rocket launch for the first time | Nick Lavars | GizMag.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

You can't accuse Blue Origin of being entirely secretive, considering the company has publicly celebrated after each of its three rocket landings thus far. But when Jeff Bezos' New Shepard vehicle is fired into the air on Sunday he'll be giving space fans a real-time look at the action, with the company set to live stream one of its launches for the first time.

The astronomically curious have been a bit spoilt by the slick public relations machine at rival SpaceX. Elon Musk's company has allowed fans to share the excitement of its forays into space through a series live streams covering both its successes and failures, all presented by informative SpaceX engineers and staffers.

Before European Christians Forced Gender Roles, Native Americans Acknowledged 5 Genders | Pearson McKinney | BiPartisanReport.com

Before European Christians Forced Gender Roles, Native Americans Acknowledged 5 Genders | Pearson McKinney | BiPartisanReport.com | immersive media | Scoop.it

It wasn’t until Europeans took over North America that natives adopted the ideas of gender roles. For Native Americans, there was no set of rules that men and women had to abide by in order to be considered a “normal” member of their tribe.

In fact, people who had both female and male characteristics were viewed as gifted by nature, and therefore, able to see both sides of everything. According to Indian Country Today, all native communities acknowledged the following gender roles: “Female, male, Two Spirit female, Two Spirit male and Transgendered.”

The “Two Spirit” culture of Native Americans was one of the first things that Europeans worked to destroy and cover up. According to Brits like George Catlin, the Two Spirit tradition had to be eradicated before it could go into history books. Catlin said the tradition:

“..Must be extinguished before it can be more fully recorded.”

However, it wasn’t only white Europeans that tried to hide any trace of native gender bending. According to Indian Country Today, “Spanish Catholic monks destroyed most of the Aztec codices to eradicate traditional Native beliefs and history, including those that told of the Two Spirit tradition.” Throughout these efforts by Catholics and Christians, Native Americans were forced to dress and act according to newly designated gender roles.

ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction

ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction | immersive media | Scoop.it
Students who learn in a creative environment, are exposed to creative activities and assignments, and observe their teacher modeling creative thinking will become more creative thinkers (Sternberg & Williams, 1996). A creative learning environment that embraces students and engagement along with critical thinking and creative thinking skills is essential to student achievement (Boykin & Noguera, 2011, 2012; Marks, 2000, as cited in Jensen, 2013). To plan the instruction that matches your creativity nurturing classroom enviornment, first identify the nonnegotiables. The nonnegotiables consist of the curricular standards, the required content, and the skills that are the target of a lesson (Drapeau, 2004). Then, choose one of four roads on the Creativity Road Map or combine roads to intentionally integrate creative instruction with content.

This article really gave me a new look on things. Many teachers are timid about using technology, but they might be missing out on some really great things. I also really liked the idea that kids are able to teach themselves some things. It's no longer a pen and paper generation, they are ready to learn some things on their own.
