Yesterday we were pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Columbia University, the Advanced Data Visualization Project (ADVP). The initiative, based at Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), will facilitate research into data visualization and its implications for academia and industry in a world increasingly awash with data. The project will explore data visualization applications in various fields, including journalism, science, medicine and public health, law, architecture, planning and political science and utilize experts from the university, Thomson Reuters and outside researchers. Thomson Reuters will be actively engaged with the program and lead one of six flagship visualization projects.

New Statesman - Europe, what have you done for me lately?

New Statesman - Europe, what have you done for me lately? | Il Web per le microimprese | Scoop.it
The debate about whether or not Britain should have a referendum on its membership of the European Union continues to rumble on with politicians from the left and right intervening. But not a single politician has mentioned a new piece of European legislation which is set to reduce mobile costs for consumers in Britain and further afield.

In the last few days, most mobile phone customers will have received a text from their operator informing them that roaming charges, the cost of using data services abroad on smart phones, are falling. None will have been told that the change is due to concerted action by the European Commission rather than a benevolent decision by their mobile company.

BBC launches 2012 Olympics live interactive video player with replay-friendly synced datas

BBC launches 2012 Olympics live interactive video player with replay-friendly synced datas | Il Web per le microimprese | Scoop.it

The video player combines the video with the associated data that is available to the BBC, creating a much richer experience for its audiences, according to Perry : “Where we are able to show athlete performance data, the key thing is that we synchronise the data and video together so that you always see the stats appropriate for the point in the video that you are watching,” advised Parry. “So if you decide to watch a video from the start, we won’t give you the results from the end. And if you are watching live, we won’t show the result of the Men’s 100m before you’ve had a chance to watch it!”
