Boys do read differently; that does not mean that they can't love reading. It just means that we have to select more careully.

11 Mind Mapping Apps for the iPad

11 Mind Mapping Apps for the iPad | Ignite Reading & Writing | Scoop.it

Mind mapping is a method that works for quite a lot of people. Brain storming, idea mapping, thought generation, think tanks – call it what you will. Traditionally done on large pieces of paper, why not use your iPad to create mind maps? You could use these for your own purposes, or “convert” those large flip charts into a smaller, digital version.

Grit: The Other 21st Century Skills

Grit: The Other 21st Century Skills | Ignite Reading & Writing | Scoop.it

"Due to the interest of my post The Other 21st Skills, I decided to discuss individually each of the skills or dispositions I proposed that are in addition to the seven survival skills as identified by Tony Wagner. This post focuses on grit."

Via Beth Dichter, Jennifer Hurley-Coughlin
Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 1, 9:15 PM

Are you interested in learning more about how grit is a 21st century skill? Jackie Gerstein provides an in-depth look at grit in this post. You will find an image with a great definition, a TED Talk by Angela Duckworth on grit, as well as a link to a quiz that allows you to measure your grit level compared to others, and a list of some of the "characteristics or dispositions of Grit."

Perhaps you are asking yourself how can I work grit into my classroom?

For example, project based learing, or having students work on independent study projects (think passion-driven) provide opportunities for students to use some of the dispositions discussed, such as tenacity, self-control, self-discipling and long-term goal oriented.

As always, there is a robust list of additional resources.

Let’s hear it for audiobooks!

Let’s hear it for audiobooks! | Ignite Reading & Writing | Scoop.it

"Audiobooks seem to greatly appeal to many people and alienate others, who consider them, somehow, a ‘cheat’ on the experience of reading.  For children, however, they are proven literacy tool that help kids by:

Introducing them to books above their reading level

Improving their vocabulary acquisition, fluency and comprehension

Teaching critical listening

I don’t really understand all the negative flap about them, though.

I think people get too hung up on the idea that somehow audiobooks replace reading – they don’t, and should not. They are simply a different experience that allows people/kids with different dominant learning modalities (auditory vs. visual, etc.) to enjoy the art of storytelling in a way most suited to their strengths, and are especially great to use with reluctant readers to lead the back into the reading process itself."

Via Heather Stapleton
Katie Frank's insight:

I believe that audiobooks are bringing back the art of storytelling, and that the actors who record audiobooks are often outstanding.

Also, I've been loving the Whispersync feature from Amazon, making it possible to read, then listen, between devices. It allows me to be mindful of how I want to experience a book.

Heather Stapleton's curator insight, June 8, 10:42 PM

Free audiobooks are on offer again from SYNC during the US summer break. It is a great opportunity to download and listen to YA and classics for free. Go to http://www.audiobooksync.com/

for more details. If you live outside United States also look at this link http://www.audiobooksync.com/free-sync-downloads/non-u-s-listener/

While discussing, it is logic, the psycology, the better half. Once you decided to start with it is the best half, to go with the Science the proven subject, which needs some more reaserch for the betterment of the society. From this point the Science and Phylosophy go to gether, no body is not sure of the output. Respect each other and make the points to be solved and tobe promoted. No love, no fear, makes way for justice.
