Using technology to enrich kindergarten conversations

Using technology to enrich kindergarten conversations | iGeneration - 21st Century Education | Scoop.it

Ryan Falconer's curator insight, April 12, 4:01 PM

I have used images to engage students in their reading.  For example, we read a 'Magic Treehouse Book' where the character went to a coral reef, so we looked at pictures of reefs and saw how beautiful the reef was and how the author used words to try and get us to see this in our mind.  This article makes me realize that part of the benefit of technology is to make actual personal connections for the students.  I should have or could have reached out to other classroom in China during Chinese new years, or even just the Mandarin School in Toronto.  This would have helped make those connections stronger for my students with the topic of inquiry we were engaged in.

Lauren Cook's curator insight, December 13, 2013 12:32 PM

As a kindergarten teacher, you can teach AM, PM, and/or full day kindergarten. When I was younger I just took AM kindergarten, which was useful because I got used to waking up for school. The thing was I would leave after a few hours, this article showed the benefits of full day kindergarten. I dont think this would be a bad thing, because you are in school for full days the rest of the time in high school anyways. By being in school for longer that doesnt mean they just need to learn more math, science, and writing skills. But they can learn better how to work with other students, and social skills, just by being in the classroom environment for longer.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 14, 7:41 PM

Kindergarten should be a place children look forward to going to. What preparation might do is take away from that enjoyment. I looked at the common core standards and was taken aback by the abstractness and the need for abstract thinking. Children operate in the concrete, the right now.
