Absolutely...however, students need to have the "grit'" and tenacity to survive as well as to thrive in this world. Some, if not most, of us Boomers learned this during our lifetimes, most likely the "hard way," so to speak.

 

Just being able to focus in the digital world for younger people (mainly younger children) has to be a challenge in itself! While the digital age is perfect for them to learn as quickly as their brains are moving, somewhere there has to be a delicate "balance" to keep them grounded. 

 

Yes, we do need to align the skill sets needed to survive and become great leaders with what we're teaching young children. I predict an education overhaul in the very near future!

Having just finished our fifth class of Leadership Academy for our emerging CPA leaders, this article resonated  with me. While the notion of EQ as a critical leadership quality is on point, I think it must be in the context of how leadership is changing in this hyper-connected, rapidly changing world. When we asked our emerging leaders to compare and contrast leadership across the ages, they identified the common traits we all know - vision, communication, passion, and authority. Yet when looking at the current state, they added words like collaborative, transparent, more communication,.

 

These skills include the ability to engage and inspire followers to a shared vision and action. The other critical piece is to 'know themselves' in a way they can be that authentic leader with their own unique style rather than trying to fit some standard leadership model that forces them to change. We do this with Strengths-Finders and Values to help them become self-aware.

 

Thus I see the idea of EQ to include specific group dynamics, collaboration, listening, and making your thinking visible to others. These skills can be taught and developed and we are seeing emerging leaders  able to apply these as they grow into the kind of future leaders we will need.

I find it interesting how we as a society split hairs with regards to masculine versus feminine leadership traits or values ... sometimes with the undertone that "masculine" traits make for stronger leaders while "feminine" traits make for weaker leaders. Then folks take this bias a step further to connotate negativity towards crossing these traditional gender-based biases (e.g. men who demonstrate traditionally "feminine" character traits are percieved as weak, while women who demonstrate traditionally "masculine" character traits are perceived as jerks as opposed to being perceived as strong leaders like their male counterparts).

 

Can we all just agree that strong, effective leadership is just that (regardless of gender), and that our own biases about what is masculine versus feminine quite frankly is irrelavent?

Thanks for the great curation Maria Rachelle.  Starting with my mother, some of the most influential leadership mentors I have had are women.   This research makes a lot of sense to me!

 

Especially the following section:

 

Empathy Is Innovation. While leaders spend considerable time and effort trying to envision markets and pushing out innovation, empathy can often generate simple, yet breakthrough ideas. In her years working as an advocate for charities in Britain and abroad, Anna Pearson noticed a pattern: there were many people who wanted to volunteer — but were too busy (or had schedules too varied) to commit to a cause.

 

To bridge the gap between what volunteers could give and what people need, Anna re-imagined volunteering on a very small scale. Her London-based non-profit Spots of Time connects organizations with people who can give an hour or so at a time, and often at a moment’s notice. The lesson? Anna trained her empathy not just on beneficiaries of charity but also on volunteers. That kindness and sensitivity to others was the catalyst for creativity.

It all comes down to what your company culture is, and what you hope to achieve as a result of this culture. 

 

When we work with executive teams one of the questions that we ask is this:  "What is impossible today; however, if we accomplished this would be a game-changer for our industry?"  Because when you think of it -- nothing is impossible.

 

When you have a leader like the CEO of Zappos...he is constantly asking himself and the team this question.

Zappos has led the business community in new management concepts in the past. This idea is super-radical.


Articles published by the company provide a little detail on how this system will work,  however I get the impression that the concept will evolve as they discover major shortcomings and seek to address them.


Zappos may be getting rid of official job titles and management responsibilities, however natural leaders are sure to emerge and take control. In the absence of clear reporting lines and command structures, there will be a strong tendency for 'feifdoms ' to emerge. 


Concepts such as Holacracy, Democracy, Communism, etc. are wonderful in theory, however there is one major obstacle that has never been overcome: the nature of human beings. Self-interest always wins!


In my opinion, Zappos will only make this work after a serious dilution and modification of the core principles. I admire their effort and look forward to observing their progress. We may all learn something valuable from this initiative.

The Most Successful Leaders Do 15 Things Automatically, Every Day

Leadership is learned behavior that becomes unconscious and automatic over time.  For example, leaders can make several important decisions about an issue in the time it takes others to understand the question.   Many people wonder how leaders know how to make the best decisions, often under immense pressure.  The process of making these decisions comes from an accumulation of experiences and encounters with a multitude of difference circumstances, personality types and unforeseen failures.   More so, the decision making process is an acute understanding of being familiar with the cause and effect of behavioral and circumstantial patterns;  knowing the intelligence and interconnection points of the variables involved in these patterns allows a leader to confidently make decisions and project the probability of their desired outcomes.   The most successful leaders are instinctual decision makers.  Having done it so many times throughout their careers, they become immune to the pressure associated with decision making and extremely intuitive about the process of making the most strategic and best decisions. This is why most senior executives will tell you they depend strongly upon their “gut-feel” when making difficult decisions at a moment’s notice.

But true character-based leadership emerges through discomfort. Ours, and others. It requires focusing our attention on how we can make others shine. Making mindful judgment calls.
