How To: Resolve Conflicts at Work

How To: Resolve Conflicts at Work | iEduc | Scoop.it
“ Nasty emails flying back and forth. Death stares in the break room. Steely tension in meetings. Side-taking. Tattle-taling. Sabotaging.”

This is the stuff of employee conflicts. “Every day—from piddling office bickering to full-out wars—disagreements between colleagues happen,” says Hank Boyer, president of consulting firm Boyer Management Group. While interpersonal disagreements may be normal, they’re also costly. One study by the publishers of the Myers-Briggs Assessment and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument found that U.S. workers spend 2.8 hours per week dealing with conflict, which equates to $359 billion in wasted wages based on average hourly earnings of $17.95.

To nip these inevitable feuds in the bud—or better yet, stave them off altogether—follow these 11 tips:

In 2013, the University of California, Irvine launched a MOOC drawing inspiration from the popular television series “The Walking Dead.” The course delved into the zombie phenomenon as a backdrop to exploring scientific concept , mathematics and health .

This year, the university has rolled out “Fight or Die: The Science Behind FX’s ‘The Strain”. Irvine has teamed up with cable television channel FX and tech company Instructure to produce a MOOC based on the popular vampire TV show. It’s a 4-week course running on the Instructure Canvas Network platform.

The MOOC takes place in an environment where a devastating attack by cyber-terrorists and a fast-spreading disease epidemic set the stage for exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of cyber-crime, parasitology, and disease dynamics. The course is driven by video excerpts from “The Strain”, and students are required to compare the science in the television drama to analogous situations in real life. Students are also expected to generate original content of their own to share, based on the course concepts.

The first module of the course is this summer, and the premiere for Season 2 of “The Strain” airs three weeks after that. Enrolment is currently underway at the Canvas Network website – and it’s free.

Using Analytics To Create an Exceptional Student Experience and Keep At-Risk Students in School -- Campus Technology

Using Analytics To Create an Exceptional Student Experience and Keep At-Risk Students in School -- Campus Technology | iEduc | Scoop.it
Building an exceptional student experience requires and alignment of various disparate data across the institution. A key part of the exceptional student experience is identifying which students are at risk of dropping out or leaving their institution. As reputation and the bottom line are impacted, it is critical to stem attrition in higher education. But what do you do once you've identified which students are at risk? Successful intervention is key to keeping students on track. That could consistent of academic intervention for extra course study, better advising, a revised set of classes. Or it could be non-academic intervention: more financial aid, a work-study program, or social services intervention.
