Sugata Mitra: schools should scrap the 3Rs

Sugata Mitra: schools should scrap the 3Rs | iEduc | Scoop.it

“Reading, writing and arithmetic should be deemphasised and replaced with comprehending, communicating and computing. That’s the world we live in today,” Prof Mitra said at the education technology conference Bett in east London today.

Jesus Sandoval's curator insight, February 6, 5:26 AM

For many reasons I agree with what Sugata Mitra says about replacing certain education topics such as reading, writing and arithmetic with other beneficial ones such as comprehending, communicating and computing. In today’s modernized society skills such as communication and understanding technology off the palm of one’s hand is very beneficial when looking for a well paid job. Once a student enters high school these skills (communicating and computing) should be strengthened. It will only benefit the students down the road. What is the point of teaching students how to write with correct punctuation and proper grammar when they can simply turn on  grammar check when typing on a computer? The point is that machines and devices have been developed to do one’s thinking for them. The best option is to teach students how to work with these devices and machines (computing) and not much writing and reading anymore. The world is developing way too quickly to be focused on perfecting one’s writing and reading skills.

Mobile Learning Versus ELearning (Infographic)

Indeed, what is the difference?  In fact, why is eLearning, upon whatever platform, brain-based?  I submit because it's enjoyable, and also easy, and accessible, and interesting.  The cell phone is a hook whose very "handy"ness adds charm to the learning process, and, thus, engagement.

True. A lot of people on sessions designed for computers are showing up on their mobile devices lately.
